Firm hired to study industry growth

The city of Tucumcari hired an Albuquerque-based engineering firm to conduct a preliminary engineering report for future industrial growth.

City commissioners voted unanimously to approve an agreement for engineering services with Forsgren Associates, Inc.

This type of report will identify the current infrastructure located on 250 acres South of Tucumcari Boulevard and east of South Mountain Road, said Misty Gulley, project coordinator the city's development division.

The area has been slated by the Quay County Gaming Authority and city officials as a potential sight for the construction of a race track and casino if the state's last gaming/racing license is awarded to Tucumcari/Quay County.

The city commissioners should be given massive credit for thinking ahead, said Warren Frost, executive director of the gaming authority.

Frost said the commission has shown initiative and confidence in the prospect of bringing a casino and race track to Tucumcari/Quay County. He said this shows the commission knows progress is being made and the outlook is positive.

The city needs to continue to research and identify all assets and properties for potential economic development, said Amiel Curnutt, mayor of Tucumcari.

Commissioner Jimmy Sandoval inquired to the cost of the engineering services and how long will it take to complete.

Gulley said the cost will be $50,000, which will be paid with a $45,000 grant and a city match of $5,000.
