Mesalands Community College offering summer camp

Mesalands Community College welcomes young and adult campers to participate in Summer Adventure Camp, July 16-21. Summer Adventure Camp will provide a week of fun and learning for campers of all ages. The theme this year is "Summer Stampede for the Entire Family." The camp includes southwestern themed classes and a tour and lunch at Conchas Dam on Saturday.

"Summer Adventure Camp will be a great family experience and an opportunity to learn more about the southwest," Donna M. Garcia, director of academic affairs at Mesalands said. "This year we have included classes for adults and have condensed the entire camp into one week. Campers can come all day."

Classes for young campers include, but are not limited to: Dino Digging, Mural Painting, Kids' Physical Activity Camp, Introduction to Video Editing, and Sleep with the Dinosaurs. The college has partnered with Eastern New Mexico Art Space to offer classes, with Art Space also donating materials and classroom space. Two classes will be held at Art Space: Breyer Model Horse Club and Dinosaur Museum Mural.

During the Dinosaur Museum Mural class, young campers will create a new mural for the kids' section at the Mesalands Dinosaur Museum. Then 4 p.m.-6 p.m. July 21, all campers and the general public are invited to attend a reception hosted by Art Space at the Dinosaur Museum for the unveiling of the new mural.

Adult campers, ages 18 and older, can look forward to classes in artistic silversmithing, computer basics, Southwest cooking, and a Tucumcari mural tour.

All campers will then come together for the Conchas Dam tour starting at 8 a.m. July 21 and ending with lunch at noon. The Sleep with the Dinosaurs class is also on Saturday, running from 6:30 p.m. until 7 a.m. Sunday

Individual class prices range from $25 to $92.50, with a 20 percent discount for booking the entire camp. Youth campers can register for a full week for $175, while adult campers can register for $225.

To register for classes, contact Donna M. Garcia at 461-4413, ext. 176, or the Student Services Office at 461-4413 ext. 153. Mesalands summer hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m., to 5 p.m. For information and a complete list of classes, visit
