Getting their kicks

More than 50 classic cars and 100 bikers rumbled down Tucumcari's stretch of Route 66 during a pair of weekend events.

Gatherings for Wheels on 66 and the Mother Road Rally were held in conjunction at the Tucumcari Convention Center.

"It was a good turnout and we definitley got some good groundwork for next year's event," said Kevin Mueller, Wheels on 66 coordinator.

The weekend's festivities were kicked off with the registration of the New Mexico Route 66 Association's 2012 motor tour.

Mueller said the cars participated in a cruise of Route 66 and a horn symphony directed by Route 66 musician Bob Saar.

Later residents gathered at the convention center to meet and speak with several Route 66 authors and artist.

Saars debuted his newest song, "Tucumcari Good," during the social hour.

The shine and glamour of the classical cars faded as the association continued their tour to Gallup, though the void was quickly filled with the luster and rumble of motorcycles.

"The exact number of bikers we had attending the rally is not known, though we did have 101 register for the poker run," said Rally Coordinator Melissa Foster.

The two-day Rally event was kicked off with a parade on Route 66 and featured vendors, food booths and music.

There was also a car and bike show hosted by the local Rollerz Only car club.

Bikers participated in a poker run and a series of biker games on the second day.

To close out the event a dance was held live music from the Santa Fe based classic rock tribute band Mid Life Crisis.
