Wildfire consumes 250 acres

A wildfire near Conchas has burned 250 acres and continues to burn along the Canadian River, according to New Mexico State Forestry officials.

Dan Ware, the department's fire prevention and outreach program manager, said in a release on Tuesday that the fire is in the Canadian River and is inaccessible with any type of equipment. He said the fire continues to move south toward a natural fuel break, which should slow it down.

Ware said the fire was started on Saturday by lightning and has moved on to private property. He said the fuel for this fire is mesquite and grasses. No structures have been threatened and no evacuations have been made.

The fire is reported to be 60 percent contained with a burnout operation planned for Wednesday to secure the southeast side of the fire.
