Police: Teen drowns at Conchas Lake

A 15-year-old Sandia Park male drowned at Conchas Lake diving off of his family's fishing boat Tuesday, according to the New Mexico State Police.

The name of the teen was being withheld Tuesday night, Capt. Jimmy Glascock said, pending notification of all immediate family members.

Glascock said state police were dispatched at 1:15 p.m. to the Conchas Lake State Park in reference to a possible drowning.

According to a press release from Lt. Robert McDonald, NMSP public information officer:

• Officers were told that a 15-year-old boy had jumped off the family fishing boat and began to swim to shore. The boy was swimming towards the shore when he went under the water and did not return to the surface.
• The boy's brother, who was also on the boat jumped in the water to try and find him. After a few minutes of trying to locate him, the family rushed to shore to call for help.
• The New Mexico State Police Dive Team was called to the lake to search for the boy, according to the release.
• After a brief search, the presumed drowned body of the teen was recovered in approximately 13 feet of water.
