Rattlers finish third at State track meet

Tucumcari Lady Rattlers Brook Dow captures a state AA long jump championship and the Rattlers track team finished third in the Class 2A boys state track meet in Albuqueque.

The Rattlers' Michael Marroquin runs in the middle of the pack on the first lap of the 2A boys 800 meter run. He finished sixth at the state tournament in Albuquerque.

"It was exciting finish for the boys," said Rattlers Track coach Wayne Ferguson.

Ferguson said the Rattlers track team knew if they ran and competed well we could get third place.

"They put themselves in a bind in the mile relay," Ferguson said. "They had to place third and beat Estancia in order to finish third in team standings.

Ferguson said the excitement came to a head in the last 50 meters of the relay.

"Zach Hurd was neck and neck with Estancia's runner," Ferguson said.

Hurd pulled away in the last 50 meters for to beat them."

Ferguson said the girls team had some disappointments on Friday, being disqualified from the 400 meter relay and not making the finals in the 800 meter relay.

"Brook brought us back on Saturday with the long jump championship," Ferguson said.

Ferguson said there were other Lady Rattlers who placed well including: Abigaile Jimenez who placed third in shot put and fourth in the 100 meter dash and Crystal Hernandez who placed fourth in the 3200 meter run.
