Tucumcari city commissioners voted to hire Doug Powers as city manager Thursday night following an executive session.
"I am proud to be working for the city," Powers said. "I have been with the city for 20 years."
The commission met behind closed doors following Thursday's regular meeting to discuss hiring Powers.
Powers had been serving as interim city manager since Sept. 29, 2011, when then city manager Bobbye Rose was fired by the commissioners.
"He has done a great job serving as city manager," said Mayor Amiel Curnutt.
Curnutt said the decision to hire Powers was based on how well he has worked with the commissioners and city staff.
"He has brought us closer together as a commission," Curnutt said. "He is dedicated to working towards the improvement of Tucumcari."
Curnutt said the commission's time would be better spent working with Powers to improve the city, rather than advertising and searching for a new manager.
"Working together, that is what it's going to take to get Tucumcari going," Powers said. "This is where I live, and I don't plan on going anywhere."
The commissioners also discussed pending litigation between Rose, the former city manager, and the city during the executive session.
Curnutt said there was only discussion in this matter and he could not comment any further.
