The Logan Longhorns split Homecoming wins with the Springer Red Devils Thursday night at Logan.
The girls couldn’t quite finish off a fourth-quarter comeback, falling 56-55 to the Lady Red Devils. The boys never trailed in a 86-69 win to move their record to 17-4.
“We had a big comeback, though it just fell short,” said Lady Longhorns head coach Clair Rachor.
With nine seconds left in the game, senior Nicole Collins hit two free throws to give the Lady Longhorns (16-6) a 55-54 lead, their first lead of the second half. However, Springer’s Angelica Montoya broke away from her defender under the goal and hit a jump shot to clinch the win for the Lady Red Devils.
“It was a tough loss, but we have to keep pushing ourselves,” said Collins. “Tonight’s loss hurt, but we have to get over it and get ready for Melrose.”
Trailing by eight points, Logan began its comeback midway through the final period. Brooke Rachor gave the Lady Longhorns a spark by hitting a 3-pointer, followed by a steal and easy lay-up by Whitney Cordova. The Lady Longhorns tied matters later in the fourth on a pair of Rachor free throws, and neither team led by more than two the rest of the night.
“I can’t say enough about the team,” Coach Rachor said. “They have all played with and continue to play with heart.”
Cordova scored a game-high 21, while Collins added 10. Brittany Baca had 15 points and Kyra Laumbach 11 for the Lady Red Devils.
