Extension hosting cooking class for blood sugar control

A special cooking school that is aimed at helping people with diabetes learn how to prepare delicious foods and manage their blood sugar levels will be held in February. The school will meet for 3 hours each evening Feb. 21, 23, 28, and March 1, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The schools are funded by a grant from the Department of Health and will be free of charge.

The classes will be taught by Jessie Robinson and Brenda Bishop. The plan is to have a Certified Diabetes Educator at one session to answer questions and discuss medications.

The first session will cover meal planning. The second session will cover carbohydrates and desserts. The third session will cover side dishes and the last session will be main dishes and low-fat cooking. Participants will receive a notebook full of information, and two cookbooks. During each class, participants will prepare and sample 4 dishes.

Seating at this cooking school will be limited to 25 people. The cooking school is free but pre-registration is a must and the participants must plan on attending all four sessions. We will receive reimbursement for the food costs by the number of people present, so if you reserve a spot, you will need to be there. The Cooking School is sponsored by the Quay County Extension Service. Call 461-0562 for more information.

If you have a disability and are in need of auxiliary service in order to participate in this program call Brenda at 461-0562 before Feb. 15. The Quay County Cooperative Extension Service as a field office of New Mexico State University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
