Serving the High Plains
Brenda Bishop, second from left, leads strong seniors in an exercise routine for Quay County Extension Service and Mesalands Community College's "Strong Seniors Stay Young" program.
Following the success of the Strong Seniors Stay Young Program, the Quay County Extension Service and Mesalands Community College will be offering additional work out classes.
"Last year we had such an interest in the program that we could not fit everyone into our room,"said Brenda Bishop, Extension Home Economist.
Bishop said the exercise program is geared towards middle-aged and older men and women in Tucumcari. She said due to the high demand for this class two sessions will be offered this year.
"There are only 24 spots available in each session," Bishop said.
The classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the first session will run from 8 a.m., to 9 a.m., and the second from 9 a.m., to 10 a.m. The Tucumcari series will be co-led by Tom Morris, Mesalands Community College Fitness Center Director and Bishop.
"All needed equipment will be provided by the Extension Service," Bishop said. "This year the program has added some balance exercises and exercises to improve your walking ability."
Bishop said the Strong Seniors Program will use the Strong Women Program curriculum which was developed by Miriam Nelson, PhD with Tufts University.
"We are adapting the program for use with women and men," Bishop said. "The program is based upon years of research on how strength training and proper nutrition improve the health of women of all ages."
Bishop said strength is a critical factor in living healthier, more active lives. She said research shows that a program of strength training not only improves bone density but reduces falls, improves arthritis symptoms, and increases flexibility and strength.
To enroll an information packet must be picked up from the extension office. Bishop said the forms must be filled out and a doctor's release obtained before the start of class. She said persons, who have taken the class previously, do not need a doctor's release, but must call the extension office and reserve a spot.
"People will need to sign up for a specific session and attend that session," Bishop said.
The cost for the series of classes will be $20 per person and must be paid on the first day of class.
