  • Tularosa takes victory at Snake Pit

    Ron Warnick|Feb 12, 2020

The Tucumcari boys basketball team's chances for a come-from-behind district victory Friday against Tularosa essentially evaporated when the Rattlers' leading scorer, Jesus Ramos, fouled out late in the third quarter. The visiting Wildcats went on a 16-2 run after that, sealing a 76-57 victory at the Snake Pit. Ramos, a sophomore guard, scored a team-high 19 points despite sitting the entire fourth period. "With him out, we're a very different team," Tucumcari coach John Span said. Tularosa...

  • Lady Rattlers fall 46-45 to Tularosa

    Staff report|Feb 12, 2020

Shaky free-throw shooting, foul trouble and a scoring drought in the second half kept the Tucumcari girls basketball team from notching an upset as it fell 46-45 at No. 2-ranked Tularosa on Saturday. The game was the Class 3A-District 4 opener for both teams. Tucumcari, ranked ninth in last week’s coaches poll, fell to 13-8 overall and has lost three in a row — all against Top 10 teams. Tularosa, ranked second in the coaches poll and No. 3 by MaxPreps.com, improved to 18-3. Ashley Shipley led the Lady Rattlers with 14 points. Jasmine Jones adde...

  • Melrose triumphs over Logan

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Feb 12, 2020

MELROSE - Making the ordinary plays was what got the Melrose Buffaloes an early lead against Logan on Thursday night. Hot shooting and hustle for extraordinary plays turned it into a blowout. Melrose led by double digits for the final 18 minutes and by as much as 34 in the second half, giving the family of Buffs coach Kevin Lackey plenty of time to fill his office with 200 balloons to celebrate that many wins over nine seasons with Dora and Melrose. "That just means I've coached a bunch of...

  • Lady Longhorns rally to claim 51-49 victory

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Feb 12, 2020

MELROSE - The Melrose and Logan girls basketball teams expect to see each other multiple times between Thursday and the conclusion of the season, and possibly for the Class 1A championship. But as much as both teams appreciate and respect the other, they're admittedly tired of seeing each other, and crossing one potential meeting off the list was a victory in itself. With a big fourth quarter from Karli Webb, the visiting Longhorns rallied to claim a 51-49 victory and eliminate any chance of a...

  • Longhorns overtake Grady/San Jon

    Ron Warnick|Feb 5, 2020

LOGAN - A key element in Logan's 63-60 district win Thursday over area rival Grady/San Jon was the Longhorns' star player was on the court in the final minutes of the game, and the Bronchos' star player wasn't. Bronchos coach Jonathan Langan said Rush had turned to a re...

  • Lady Longhorns defeat Grady/San Jon 57-12

    Ron Warnick|Feb 5, 2020

LOGAN - The Grady/San Jon girls basketball team knew it might have a tough night Thursday against the No. 1-ranked team in Class 1A. It was made tougher by an illness to Lady Bronchos coach Alicia Rush, who couldn't yell instructions to her players on the floor during a 57-12 loss. "We're better than what we did tonight, but I'm sick and they can't hear me," a hoarse Rush said in a near-whisper after the game. "If I can't direct traffic, they're not (as good)." Teryn Foote led the Lady Bronchos...
