  • Lady Rattlers take season opening loss

    Staff report|Apr 7, 2021

The Tucumcari girls basketball team took it on the chin during a 64-22 season-opening loss Friday at Robertson in Las Vegas. Alexus Lafferty scored 12 points to lead the Lady Rattlers, and Caylee Benavidez added 10 points. The Cardinals took control of the game with a 12-0 scoring run in the first quarter and a 16-0 run in the second. Robertson led 41-14 at intermission. Tucumcari coach Gary Hittson said ball-handling woes plagued his young team, which lost four starters from last season’s Class 3A quarterfinals squad. “We need to value the...

  • Logan girls fend off Clovis Christian

    Staff report|Apr 7, 2021

The Logan girls basketball team fended off a challenge from Clovis Christian during a 50-44 victory in both teams’ season opener Saturday. Kambry Burns led the Lady Longhorns with 13 points. Karlee Cantrell added 12 points and Kyra Conway 11. Logan had a 30-22 lead at intermission, but the Eagles made a 15-9 run in the third quarter to tighten the game. The Lady Longhorns went 5-of-8 from the free-throw line in the final period to preserve their lead and the win. Conway also made two key 3-pointers during the period. “(Clovis Christian) are pre... Full story

  • Logan's Longhorns fall to hot-shooting Eagles

    Staff report|Apr 7, 2021

The Logan boys basketball team fell 69-62 to hot-shooting Clovis Christian during both teams’ season-opening game Saturday. Dante Sanchez scored 19 points to led the Longhorns. Kaden Riggs added 18 points and Garrett Bollinger 14 for Logan. The Longhorns briefly had a 55-50 lead early in the fourth quarter. But the Eagles went on 9-0 run to retake the lead and never trailed again. Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said his team’s first foe was a tough one. “Clovis Christian can really shoot it,” he said. “We struggled to score at times, and our defen...

  • MCC golfer invited to championship

    Staff report|Apr 7, 2021

Tanner Croom of Mesalands Community College’s golf team has been invited to participate in this month’s National Collegiate Golf Club Association’s championship in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Croom won a tournament in Windsor, Colorado, in late March. He shot a 5-over-par 77 on the first day and fired a 3-under-par 69 on the second day, a personal best. The Stampede golf team will travel to Kingman, Arizona, for its next tournament Saturday and Sunday, followed by Prescott, Arizona, on April 17-18, and completing the season at the natio...

  • Tucumcari football season ends in loss

    Staff report|Mar 31, 2021

Tucumcari continued to have matchup problems against the other team’s skill players during a 71-24 season-ending football loss Saturday at Raton. The Tigers (2-1) raced to a 35-0 lead in the first quarter, partly because of Rattler turnovers and Raton’s superior speed. “Once they got some space, it was hard to catch them,” assistant coach John Span said of Raton. “They had skill players that made it tough on us.” Head coach Wayne Ferguson was unable to make the trip to Raton because of an illness in his family. Despite the inauspiciou...

  • Logan's state hopes extinguished

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Mar 31, 2021

LOGAN - Melrose extinguished any remaining hopes that Logan would gain a berth in the Class 1A state volleyball tournament by defeating the Lady Longhorns 25-6, 25-11, 22-25, 25-23 during the regular-season finale Saturday. Logan, which ended the season 6-5 overall and 5-5 in District 6, was a longshot for a postseason bid but had a chance if it had defeated the district-champion Lady Buffaloes and if Clovis Christian had downed Fort Sumner on Saturday. Neither occurred. Melrose (11-1, 10-0)...

  • Hernandez finishes 37th overall in state championship

    Staff report|Mar 31, 2021

Several Tucumcari High School runners took part Saturday in the Class 3A cross-country state championships at Albuquerque Academy. Emmanuel Hernandez finished 37th overall in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 21 minutes, 27.39 seconds. Justin Howey of Cottonwood Classic Prep easily won the state title, defeating the runner-up by more than one minute, with a time of 15:59.28. Cottonwood Classic also won the boys team title in Class 3A with 14 points. Tohatchi was second with 47 points and New Mexico Military Institute third with 52. Dace...

  • Rattlers fall to NMMI in last home match

    Staff report|Mar 31, 2021

Spiking woes proved to be a detriment for the Lady Rattlers in a 14-25, 17-25, 21-25 loss to New Mexico Military Institute on March 23 during the team's last home match of the abbreviated season. Felicity Lopez led Tucumcari with 12 kills against NMMI. However, she and other Lady Rattlers struggled with their hitting game, committing 18 errors at the net. "We struggled with hitting more than we ordinarily do," Tucumcari coach Dana Benavidez said. "Some games are just like that. We had good...

  • Rattler basketball teams have little time to prepare

    Staff report|Mar 31, 2021

Tucumcari’s two high-school basketball teams will have little time from the end of the school’s abbreviated football and volleyball seasons before their first games. It would have been even less time for the girls team, except its season-opening game at Robertson was rescheduled from March 30 to April 2. The Tucumcari boys will open their season April 5 at Texico. The Ratters’ and Lady Rattlers’ first home games at the Snake Pit will be against Logan on April 8, with the girls game starting at 5 p.m. and the boys game following. No junior...

  • Logan falls behind Tatum

    Staff report|Mar 31, 2021

Logan fell behind early and never could quite catch up during a 50-34 road loss Saturday to defending state runner-up Tatum in Logan’s season finale of eight-man football action. Miscues by the Longhorns (1-3) put them in a hole during the first quarter. “We had a penalty when we were driving, and then we gave up an interception for a touchdown that put them up 20-0,” Logan coach Dwayne Roberts said. Tatum (3-1) led 38-14 at halftime, but Logan rallied in the third quarter. “We had (the deficit) down to eight in the third quarter, but then th...

  • Dexter dominates Rattlers 50-0

    Staff report|Mar 24, 2021

Tucumcari's football team found itself dominated from start to finish in a 50-0 loss Saturday at Dexter that was ended by the mercy rule at halftime. The Demons improved to 2-1 on the season, with its only loss to a stout Portales team during the previous week. The Rattlers fell to 0-3. Tucumcari coach Wayne Ferguson said "there wasn't a whole lot of positives" for his team during Saturday's game. "We didn't look good all," he said. "We struggled defensively; we struggled offensively. We have...

  • Logan shows off skills

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Mar 24, 2021

LOGAN - The Longhorns showed what they could do when two of their skill players aren't injured. Logan quarterback Wyatt Wright, sidelined for a game after a concussion during a season-opening loss to Melrose, went 8-of-12 passing for 134 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another score during a 42-0 win Saturday afternoon against a young and inexperienced Menaul team in eight-man football. Jordan Evans, who also was sidelined for one game after a concussion against Melrose, caught five...

  • Tucumcari volleyball team improves

    Staff report|Mar 24, 2021

The Tucumcari volleyball team showed big improvement this week, notching their first on-court victory of the abbreviated season and giving defending Class 1A champion Logan a tougher match than expected. The Lady Rattlers prevailed over Santa Rosa 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23 in a non-district matchup March 16 at the Snake Pit. “We had some great hustle plays and did better blocking at the net,” Tucumcari coach Dana Benavidez said. “The girls have had some close games that have fallen the other way all season. But this game, they finished and p...

  • Fort Sumner prevails over young San Jon squad

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Mar 24, 2021

SAN JON - Fort Sumner's volleyball squad made sure Thursday that San Jon remained in the bottom of the district standings, but both teams' records are deceiving. The Foxes prevailed 25-15, 25-13, 25-15 over a young Coyotes team to improve to a respectable 5-3 record overall but just 1-3 in District 6. That's because Fort Sumner's district is widely acknowledged as the toughest small-school schedule in the state. District 6 traditionally sends three and sometimes four teams to the state tournamen...

  • NMAA announces postseason schedules

    Staff report|Mar 24, 2021

The New Mexico Activities Association last week announced its state championship schedules for cross country and volleyball, but there will not be state-title games for football. Football will conclude with a so-called “bowl game” that would allow chosen teams to compete outside of their respective regions. The NMAA stated in a news release Wednesday the New Mexico Public Education Department ruled that championship events could be held “but must take place in accordance with the state’s public health orders.” “Most notably, this means that...

  • Focused Academy defeats Rattlers

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Mar 17, 2021

One favorable thing the Rattlers could take away Saturday was one solid scoring drive. Little else went right for the Tucumcari football team during a 42-7 loss to Albuquerque Academy in what could be the Rattlers' last home game during this abbreviated season. The Chargers' passing game, led by quarterback AJ Rivera, amassed more than 300 yards and four touchdowns against the Rattlers' overmatched secondary. Tucumcari coach Wayne Ferguson had a bad feeling about his squad before kickoff. "I...

  • Lady Rattlers suffer losses to Dexter, NMMI

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Mar 17, 2021

The Tucumcari volleyball team’s first week of district play was not ideal. The Lady Rattlers suffered losses to Dexter and New Mexico Military Institute during the opening week of their District 4 schedule last week. Tucumcari fell to 1-4 overall. Tucumcari totaled only 13 kills during its district-opening match against Dexter on March 9 at the Snake Pit, which was indicative of the Lady Rattlers’ erratic offense. Tucumcari coach Dana Benavidez said her squad has to be more consistent in executing its passes, sets and hits. “We’ve got to put...

  • Injury-depleted Logan falls to Foxes

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Mar 17, 2021

LOGAN - An injury-depleted Longhorns team proved to be no match in a 50-0 loss Friday night that showed Fort Sumner to be a probable contender for a state title in its first season of eight-man football. Logan (0-2) totaled just 21 yards of offense during a game that ended midway through the third quarter due to the mercy rule. The visiting Foxes (2-0) stormed to a 30-0 lead by the end of the first period. The Longhorns already were shorthanded before kickoff because quarterback Wyatt Wright...

  • Melrose defeats rival Logan

    Staff report|Mar 17, 2021

The Melrose volleyball squad took a one-game lead in the district standings by defeating arch-rival and defending Class 1A champion Logan 25-18, 25-16, 25-15 on Saturday at Melrose. Logan dropped to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the District 6 race. Melrose improved to 5-0, all district games. “We played good in spurts,” Logan coach Robert Young said, “but made way too many unforced errors at crucial times during the match.” Melrose travels to Logan for a key matchup on March 27 before postseason play begins the following week. Logan downed previou...

  • Rattlers take season-opening loss

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Mar 10, 2021

Defending Class 2A runner-up Texico and its skill players proved too much for Tucumcari's football team during the Rattlers' season-opening 49-14 loss Friday night at Rattler Stadium - the first high-school sports event in Tucumcari in almost a year because of COVID-19 restrictions. The Wolverines scored the game's first 43 points and racked up more than 400 yards of offense. Though he played less than a half before leaving with an elbow injury, Texico quarterback Gabe Dickerman led the charge...

  • Tucumcari squad ends week with home loss

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Mar 10, 2021

The Tucumcari volleyball squad ended its opening week with a 14-25, 16-25, 19-25 loss at its home debut Saturday afternoon against Clayton, but it came with an unexpected bonus - a good-sized audience to watch the match. Sports teams learned Thursday evening the state's Public Education Department and New Mexico Activities Association would allow spectators at most games if their counties' COVID-19 risk levels were low enough. Schools throughout the state for weeks had planned empty gymnasiums...

  • Logan volleyball overcomes Grady

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Mar 10, 2021

LOGAN - Grady's volleyball team had grabbed the momentum by winning Game Three, held a six-point lead in a Game Four of the match and seemingly had host and longtime arch-rival Logan on the ropes during both teams' season openers. That is, until Kambry Burns began serving the ball for the Lady Longhorns. Burns fueled a 9-0 scoring run during that game with four aces and made numerous other key plays during the match in Logan's 24-19, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21 victory on March 2. Burns also notched a...

  • Logan falls to rival Melrose

    Staff report|Mar 10, 2021

Logan lost its season-opening road game Friday night against eight-man football rival Melrose. Worse yet, the Longhorns lost two starters for probably at least one game because of injuries. The defending state champion and host Buffaloes scored 26 unanswered points en route to the 48-12 victory. Logan quarterback Wyatt Wright and running back Jordan Evans suffered concussions and were taken to a Clovis hospital. Both will have to sit out at least 10 days due to the New Mexico Activities...

  • Sports teams learn schedules

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Mar 3, 2021

Tucumcari and Logan's varsity football teams finally learned about their shortened-season schedules Thursday, with a possible fifth or postseason game to be determined later. Tucumcari's cross country teams also learned about their finalized schedule last week. Fans will not be allowed at games because of a statewide ban on public gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, many football and volleyball games will be broadcast live at the NHFS Network at nfhsnetwork.com, which offers...

  • Football schedules still awaited

    Staff report|Feb 24, 2021

Schedules for Tucumcari and other area prep football teams won't be known until at least Tuesday this week. Tucumcari athletic director Wayne Ferguson said schedules will remain uncertain until a Zoom videoconference with other athletic directors in New Mexico. High school football teams in the state who last week opted into playing shortened versions of fall sports in the spring will play four regular-season games, then the playoffs. One usual football foe for the Rattlers, Robertson, won't be...
