Hope Christian stormed to a 42-0 halftime lead en route to a 48-14 victory over visiting Tucumcari in both teams’ district opener on Saturday afternoon. The Rattlers (1-7) didn’t have an answer during the first half against Hope Christian passer James Jenkins, who scored three rushing touchdowns and passed for another. He also blocked a punt. “We struggled defensively pretty bad in the first half,” Tucumcari coach Wayne Ferguson said in a phone interview. “They have a very dynamic quarterback who’s going to play football at Colorado St...
Melrose was undefeated going into Saturday’s home match against Logan, and it made sure it stayed that way with a 25-14, 25-16, 25-8 district victory. The Lady Buffaloes, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, improved to 15-0 overall and 5-0 in District 6. Melrose is tied for first place with Fort Sumner in the district standings. Logan fell to 11-6 overall and 2-3 in the district. Lady Longhorns coach Robert Young was asked what his team will need to improve on in its next matchup at home against Melrose on Nov. 6. “We will need to pass better,” he said....
If the Lady Rattlers needed a match to toughen up before they begin district play this week, they got one in a 25-16, 23-25, 25-15, 24-26, 15-6 non-district home victory Saturday over Elida that took about two hours to complete. Tucumcari senior Amber Owen, who leads New Mexico's Class 3A in average kills per set, kept coming up with crucial spikes among the 22 she totaled, along with five serving aces. "We're going to keep giving her the ball. She's having a phenomenal year," Tucumcari coach Da...
LOGAN - Longhorn turnovers turned what might have been a close district game into a decisive 34-8 victory Friday for No. 1-ranked Tatum in eight-man football action. Logan (7-2) committed three turnovers during the game, including one near Tatum's red zone that was converted into a touchdown. The Longhorns also committed a key penalty that kept a Tatum scoring drive alive. "When you give a good team the ball inside the 20 or 30, they're probably going to score. We did that twice, and we just...
Mesalands Community College crowned one outright champion and saw another athlete earn a co-champion title during the finals Saturday night of its Grand Champion Region intercollegiate rodeo at the Quay County Fairgrounds rodeo arena. Mesalands bareback bronc rider Cooper Filipek, who hails from Rapid City, South Dakota, secured his title with a 77 score Saturday - the best of the night - after a successful ride on Mohawk. His cumulative score of 151 points over two days earned him a...

The Longhorns blew open a close game that was tied 6-6 at halftime with 46 points in the second half. Logan, recovering from a 46-0 loss the previous week at Fort Sumner, improved to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the district. Mesilla Valley fell to 3-3, 0-3. Longhorns coach Dwayne Roberts said his...
RAGLAND - On the edge of the caprock, a father and his teenage son built a makeshift set of goalposts that doubled as a pasture gate behind the village's general store. It was here the boy, Lewis Reagan, practiced his placekicking for the Tucumcari Rattlers football team. Those practices paid off when, as a senior, he kicked a state-record 58-yard field goal - one of three that split the uprights that night - during a 22-20 upset victory on Oct. 23, 1981, over Lovington. Nearly 40 years later, t...
The Lady Rattlers pulled off a rarity in volleyball – all 11 players on the varsity roster registered a kill during a dominating 25-10, 25-14, 25-9 victory Thursday against visiting Pecos. Tucumcari coach Dana Benavidez knew her team had spread the wealth against the Lady Panthers, but didn't know how thoroughly until she checked the statistics the next day. "I was just like, that has never happened where every player reported a kill," the sixth-year coach wrote in a text Friday. Amber Owen, ove...
TEXICO — Max Villarreal scored three touchdowns on Friday night and the struggling Texico Wolverines got back on the winning track with a 53-0 blistering of visiting Tucumcari. Texico (2-4) snapped a three-game losing streak with the rout, ending the game early in the final stanza on the NMAA’s 50-point mercy rule when Villarreal tallied from 30 yards out. He also ran in Texico’s first tally and later caught a long scoring pass from sophomore quarterback Cade Figg. Texico led 33-0 at the quarter and 47-0 at halftime against the Rattlers (1-5)...
FORT SUMNER - The Logan football team won't have an undefeated season in 2021. Fort Sumner - especially quarterback Joaquin Segura - made sure of that. Segura threw for more than 220 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for another 67 yards to power the Foxes to a 46-0 victory over the previously unbeaten Longhorns in eight-man gridiron action Friday. Clay Norman caught five of Segura's passes for 110 yards and four touchdowns in the district showdown. Though Segura would have made a Logan...
LOGAN - Despite the absence of one of the Lady Longhorns' top hitters, Logan easily defeated an overmatched Clovis Christian squad 25-10, 25-12, 25-14 during the opening of district play Saturday. Logan improved to 10-3 overall, while Clovis Christian fell to 1-6. The Lady Longhorns have been dealing with the absence of hitter Rilee Nials, who injured a groin muscle in practice about two weeks ago. Such injuries are notoriously slow to heal, and coach Robert Young anticipates she might not see...
The Mesalands Community College men’s rodeo team captured first place and the women finished fourth during a meet Sept. 23 in Cochise, Arizona. Marco Juarez finished second in the first round of the bull riding. Andy Guzman won the short go-round in bull riding. Suiting up only 17 players due to COVID-19 quarantines and injuries, Tucumcari found itself overwhelmed by a state-ranked Robertson squad during a 56-6 football loss Thursday at Las Vegas. The game, rescheduled from Friday due to a lack of referees, ended due to mercy rule midway through the third quarter. On paper, Tucumcari’s loss to Robertson didn’t look much different from its 55-0 loss the previous week against Santa Rosa. But Rattlers coach Wayne Ferguson said his team played better despite the daunting odds Thursday. “We played better th...
Undefeated Logan stormed to a 46-0 first-quarter lead at host Cloudcroft en route to a 60-0 victory Thursday in an eight-man football game. The game ended at halftime due to the mercy rule. Haden Judd scored five touchdowns for the Longhorns. Devin Kotara added two TDs and Christian Kotara had one. The Longhorns improved to 6-0 and are ranked fourth in the state in the latest coaches poll. Cloudcroft fell to 2-3 overall. “The boys played hard,” Logan coach Dwayne Roberts said. “We’re trying to get things tightened up for (Fort Sumner) next we...
Tucumcari High School volleyball experienced two weeks of cancellations or postponements due to a COVID-19 exposure that has the team under quarantine. Wiped off the schedule were Santa Rosa at Tucumcari on Sept. 21, Maxwell at Tucumcari on Sept. 23 and Tucumcari at Clayton on Sept. 28. The Santa Rosa match has been rescheduled to Oct. 14. Tucumcari athletic director Wayne Ferguson expressed hope the Clayton match also could be rescheduled but hasn’t yet heard from that school district. The Maxwell match will not be rescheduled. The Lady R...
SAN JON - The Lady Coyotes reset themselves after a first-set loss to win the next three during a 22-25, 25-16, 25-11, 25-21 match victory Saturday against visiting Evangel Christian of Albuquerque. San Jon, a vastly better squad after last season's winless campaign, improved to 6-4 overall. Lady Coyotes coach Jaree Elliott said her team struggled during that first-set loss to the Lady Eagles. "The first game, you could tell we were down on our system, very fragmented," she said. "They were...
Logan remained unbeaten this season with 52-0 home victory Friday over Alamo Navajo in eight-man football action. The Longhorns (5-0) led 40-0 after one quarter, and the game was halted at halftime due to the mercy rule. Logan scored three defensive touchdowns. Haden Judd scored touchdowns on a rushing play and a kick return. Park Strong ran for a TD, and Christian Kotara caught a touchdown pass from Brock Burns. Logan coach Dwayne Roberts said because of the lopsided score, he was able to play all of his younger players during the second...
SANTA ROSA - A fired-up Lions squad seized control of their Homecoming game with five touchdowns in the first quarter - including four by speedy running back Andres Madrid - en route to a 55-0 victory Friday over Tucumcari in a game shortened by the mercy rule late in the fourth period. Madrid peeled off touchdown runs of 10, 52, 15 and 89 yards and totaled 248 yards rushing on just nine carries by the end of the first period. Santa Rosa quarterback Nate Rodarte added 104 yards and a touchdown o...
SAN JON - If the eastern New Mexico region gave a Most Improved award for volleyball, San Jon probably would be a contender. The Lady Coyotes, 0-10 during the abbreviated previous season, improved to 5-3 overall after a 25-19, 25-18, 25-22 victory over Roy-Mosquero on Thursday. The Lady Pirates fell to 2-2. San Jon's serving attack kept the Lady Pirates on their heels much of the match, and the Lady Coyotes' net attack gained momentum as the evening progressed. Chantzee Elliott led San Jon with...
SAN JON — Citing competitive, travel and academic issues, the San Jon Municipal Schools board of trustees voted last week to withdraw from the annual Eastern Plains Athletic Conference boys and girls basketball tournaments held each January. The board during its Sept. 13 meeting unanimously approved the withdrawal but wanted San Jon to remain in the EPAC track and field meet, generally held at Fort Sumner, each spring. Board members still wanted to leave the basketball tournaments even if San Jon wasn’t allowed to remain in the EPAC track eve...
Despite missing two players and a third starter sidelined early in the game with an injury, state-ranked Raton cruised to a 44-6 victory Friday night over Tucumcari during the Rattlers' annual Homecoming game. Meanwhile, Tucumcari's already-thin offense became thinner when the Rattlers lost fullback Khobie Salvador to a knee injury in the second quarter. That was after that Rattlers lost tailback Charles Prieto to a shoulder injury the previous week. As a result, the Rattlers (1-3) totaled just...
The New Mexico Activities Association board of directors during its quarterly meeting Wednesday authorized the return of aluminum bats beginning in the 2023 high-school baseball season. New Mexico, citing safety reasons primarily, in 2012 restricted high school bats to wood or composite wood. Starting in 2023, baseball players can use wood, composite wood, composite metal or aluminum bats. Kyle Griffiths, coach of defending Class 1A baseball champion Logan, said he was excited about the change. “I feel like it will provide more offense and a...
The Logan volleyball squad went 1-2 in matches last week, which may sound like a bad stretch for a typically strong Lady Longhorns program. However, all three of Logan's matches were against state-ranked squads, including the defending champion in Class 1A and a perennial state-title contender in Class 2A. On Saturday, Logan (7-3) lost to Class 1A champion and unbeaten Melrose 15-25, 20-25, 20-25 in the championship match of Vixen Volleyball Classic tournament at Fort Sumner. Melrose defeated Sa...
Facing their toughest challenge of the season, unbeaten Logan prevailed 42-28 over visiting Magdalena in non-district eight-man football action on Friday night. For the Longhorns, Haden Judd scored three touchdowns and Park Strong ran for two scores. Brock Burns threw for three touchdowns for Logan. The Longhorns improved to 4-0 overall. Magdale...
A Hail Mary in the darkness delivered the Rattlers out of the darkness of a near-certain loss. Tucumcari quarterback Andrew Henderson-Clark connected on a 45-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Nathan Griego with no time left to give the Rattlers a come-from-behind 12-7 victory Friday evening over Loving at a darkened Rattler Stadium. The wild finish concluded a bizarre game where the coaches from both teams agreed to kick off about 20 minutes early and play just two quarters because the...
