  • Snap problems hurt Rattlers

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Oct 23, 2024

Tucumcari's air attack might have enabled it to keep up in a shootout Friday with district foe Santa Rosa, but center-snap problems short-circuited that possibility during a 55-7 loss. Bad snaps in the shotgun formation repeatedly lost yardage or threw off the rhythm of quarterback Nick Goen. One snap that sailed over his head led to a Santa Rosa defensive touchdown as the Lions staked a 28-0 lead during the Rattlers' last home game of the season. Goen went 14-for-28 passing for 125 yards and...

  • Top THS runners 'humbled' by Academy meet

    Staff report|Oct 23, 2024

Tucumcari’s top two cross-country runners ran fast. But they discovered during the massive Academy Extravaganza meet on Saturday at Albuquerque Academy they’ll need to run faster. Top Rattlers runner Alex Bueno De La O, a senior, ran the 5,000-meter course — which also hosts the sport’s state championships — in 17 minutes, 50.59 seconds. His teammate, Fernando Ureste, ran it in 18:32.79. However, Bueno De La O and Ureste finished only 16th and 24th overall in the Class 1A/2A race, respectively. The top runner, Oak Grove Classical’s Joshua Marq...

  • THS spikers win district opener

    Ron Warnick|Oct 16, 2024

Tucumcari's volleyball team won its district opener Thursday against Santa Rosa in part because of the return of a starter from an injury and the emergence of another starter as a hitter. Sophomore Serenity Savala registered eight kills as the Lady Rattlers (10-4) commanded a 34-16 advantage in that over the Lady Lions (3-11) during a 25-22, 25-21, 25-15 victory at a raucous Rattler Gymnasium. Savala had been used primarily as a blocker this season. During the team's nearly two-week break, THS...

  • Raton corrals THS air attack in 51-25 Rattlers loss

    Staff report|Oct 16, 2024

Raton made sure Tucumcari’s potent passing didn’t go wild as it did the previous week. The Tigers stifled the Rattlers’ air attack for most of the game and seized a three-touchdown lead that stood up during a 51-25 district victory Friday at Raton’s Homecoming. Tucumcari quarterback Nick Goen, who amassed more than 350 yards passing and six touchdowns during the previous week against Estancia, managed just 101 yards on 15-of-29 passing with one touchdown and two interceptions against Raton. Tigers defense flooded the deep zones and kept th...

  • NMDOT nixes drag racing on Route 66

    Staff report|Oct 2, 2024

If drag-racing events are coming to Tucumcari in 2025 and 2026, it won't be on Route 66. Assistant city manager Renee Hayoz said during the city commission meeting last Tuesday the New Mexico Department of Transportation rejected a proposal to hold drag-racing events on the city's Route 66, patterned after the Kingman Route 66 Drags in Kingman, Arizona. Hayoz said NMDOT, which holds jurisdiction over the city's Route 66 corridor, "shot us down" on the idea. The agency cited liability and safety...

  • No. 2 Legacy overwhelms Lady Rattlers

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Oct 2, 2024

A nearly two-week break for the Tucumcari volleyball team couldn't come fast enough after a 25-10, 25-15, 25-14 home loss Friday to No. 2-ranked Legacy Academy. After a 7-1 start, the Lady Rattlers have struggled to a 2-3 record after one of its best hitters and fielders, senior July Lafferty, suffered a sprained ankle during the Mora match. THS coach Dana Benavidez said a back-row player - she didn't say who - also was absent from Friday's match and her top hitter from last season, sophomore...

  • Rattlers notch first victory

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Sep 25, 2024

One decision change late in the first half of Tucumcari's game against Cuba proved critical in the Rattlers' 29-14 victory on Friday. THS coach Doug South thought he would let his quarterback take a knee with one second left in the half and go into the locker room at Rattler Stadium with a 14-14 tie. "My coaching staff talked me out of it," South said after the game. "'What does it hurt if we just throw it up and the clock runs out?' And it worked." Quarterback Nick Goen found Luis Archuleta...

  • Logan prevails over depleted THS squad

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Sep 18, 2024

LOGAN - With a 25-21, 25-16, 25-20 win on Saturday, the Lady Longhorns avenged an earlier volleyball loss this season to the Lady Rattlers, but it was a somewhat hollow one. That's because Tucumcari (8-2) was without one of its top hitters, senior July Lafferty, after she suffered a sprained ankle early in the Mora match on Thursday. Lafferty still was on crutches Saturday, and THS coach Dana Benavidez estimated she will be out for one to two weeks. Tucumcari's Big Three of Lafferty, sophomore C...

"We had a good week in...
