The vote was 4-1, with Kene Terry casting the only “no” vote during the board’s Nov. 13 meeting. Terry said he wanted to table the item until a later date. Athletic director Billy Burns recommended Logan going to six-man football because of projected low participation numbers by underclassmen and junior-high students. He faced a Nov. 29 deadl...

  • Melrose advances to finals with 50-14 win over Ft. Sumner

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Nov 8, 2023

MELROSE – It's not like Melrose expected to run roughshod over Fort Sumner on Friday night, as the Buffaloes had done two weeks earlier in district play. In fact, Friday's eight-man semifinal matchup was far more competitive for far longer. In the end, though, the top-ranked Buffaloes simply had too much firepower and pulled away to a 50-14 win over the Foxes. Fort Sumner is in a sports cooperative with House Municipal Schools in southern Quay County, but no House students are on the Foxes' r...

Tucumcari first-year coach Tarik Embrack said starting quarterback Nick Romero was out with a concussion suffered during the previous game against Dexter. Four of the Rattlers’ five linemen were out with injuries, as well. “That old saying, ‘You don’t know what you got until it’s gone,’” Embrack said of the injuries. “It...

Fifth-seeded Fort Sumner-House scored early and often against fourth-seeded Logan during a 52-0 victory Friday in the eight-man football playoffs. The game ended midway through the third quarter due to the mercy rule. The Foxes avenged a 38-34 district loss to the Longhorns on Oct. 6 where Fort Sumner blew a three-touchdown lead in the third quarter. One of those Foxes players who didn't play during the earli...

  • Demons down banged-up Rattlers

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Oct 25, 2023

Both Tucumcari and Dexter were walking wounded during their district game at Rattler Stadium on Friday, but the Demons showed how strong their depth was during a 62-7 victory. Tucumcari (3-5, 1-2) lost starting safety and slotback Kamren Apodaca due to a concussion during the previous week's Hope Christian game. That forced coach Tarik Embrack to start a freshman or eighth-grader in the secondary. Dexter exploited that repeatedly during the game. "I wasn't surprised" by the outcome, Embrack...

  • Logan blasts Tatum 50-12 in regular season finale

    Staff report|Oct 25, 2023

Logan coach Dwayne Roberts said because of Fort Sumner’s big line, he’ll be developing plays to try to counter that. “It’ll be a good game,” he said. “It’ll be exciting.” The winner...

  • Rattlers' comeback against Huskies falls short

    Staff report|Oct 18, 2023

Tucumcari’s inability to convert a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference during a 22-20 district loss Saturday afternoon against Hope Christian at Nusenda Community Stadium in Albuquerque. Daymion Urioste scored two touchdowns — including a 99-yard pass reception — and totaled more than 200 yards of offense in a losing cause for Tucumcari. Kamren Apodaca also scored a rushing TD. The Rattlers fell to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in district play. The loss hurts Tucumcari’s chances of qualifying for the Class 3A play...

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Oct 18, 2023

LOGAN - The Buffs were just too tough. No. 1-ranked Melrose, scoring three touchdowns on its first five plays from the line of scrimmage, rolled to a 54-0 district victory over Logan during the Longhorns' Homecoming game in eight-man football action Friday night. The game ended midway through the third quarter due to the mercy rule. The Buffaloes (8-1, 3-0) came into the game known as a running team.
