That’s been the modus operandi of Sen. John Arthur Smith, Deming Democrat, chairman of the Legislative Finance Committee, and state budget pragmatist since 1989. Smith said this month that “we’ve got to save money fast. If we can’t get a consensus and find some corners that still have money in them, we’re going to have to take drastic action.” Drastic as in furloughs for teachers and...

  • New year good time for reflection

    Kent McManigal|Dec 28, 2016

Although the start of a new year is completely arbitrary, it's still a good time to reflect on the past year, and look toward the future. Of course, any day is a perfect day for doing so. Just remember: It's easy to look at the past and see only the good, or only the bad. Every year holds both, just as does every era in history. I understand people looking back at parts of their own life with nostalgia. I do it, too. "If only I could go back and ..." seems to be a universal human thought. Yet when I really think about it, I remember that,...

  • Antics against Trump intolerable

    Rube Render|Dec 28, 2016

What is happening to the president elect of the United States is intolerable. News articles and editorials from major publications are referring to Donald Trump as a “Russian puppet” or as “Putin’s poodle.” They are further implying that Trump “could have an incentive to allow or launch a 9/11-style attack on the United States once in office.” Editorial writer Paul Krugman has written that, “George W. Bush came into office with questions surrounding his legitimacy that were “dispelled” by...

QCS STAFF The third time was the charm for San Jon/Grady, as 2016 was the year it hoisted a state football blue trophy. The Coyotes edged the Lake Arthur Panthers, 47-46, on Nov. 12 in San Jon to win the school's first six-man state football championship.
