The Tucumcari City Commission on Thursday gave final approval to arrangements to fund a $5.5 million project that will divert treated water from the city’s wastewater treatment facility to a nearby field to irrigate crops. The commission authorized a package that includes $770,000 in local funds and a $4.7 million, no-interest loan through the New Mexico Environment Department’s Clean Water State Revolving Loan Program. The loan will be repaid from wastewater treatment plant revenues, Lusk said at an earlier meeting. The city will pump the tre...
The Tucumcari Lodgers Advisory Tax Board on Wednesday discussed a city manager-supported proposal to reallocate Tucumcari Convention Center expenses so at least an additional $90,000 would be available to promote existing events and possibly launch new ones. Board Vice Chairman Al Patel, noting the board’s promotions division covers the convention center’s annual operations costs of $181,000 a year, proposed the board’s executive side assume half that. Patel said such an arrangement could bring two more large events to Tucumcari and increase pr...
One incumbent each in the Tucumcari City Commission and Tucumcari school board went down in defeat during nonpartisan elections Nov. 5. Two House school board incumbents apparently survived close races. Their victories are likely but won't be final until provisional ballots are tallied next week during a canvass of election results at a special Quay County commission meeting. Voters also easily approved school-bond issues in San Jon and House. Results remain unofficial until the canvass Tuesday...

On this date ... 1969: U.S. Sen. Joseph Montoya sent the newspaper a telegram, urging officials from the state, Tucumcari, San Jon and Bureau of Public Roads to find a solution on a years-long impasse on building Interstate 40 between Tucumcari and the Texas state line. Alternate I-40 alignments that would have bypassed San Jon by several miles were deemed “unacceptable to the village,” Montoya stated. The senator urged the Federal Highways Administration to hold consultations and review the request by the village and state “to find a solut...

Monday was Veterans Day. Thank you veterans for your service to our country! Without that, we wouldn’t have the freedoms we enjoy. Many of our nation’s veterans have come home physically and/or emotionally/spiritually maimed by the horrors they’ve experienced. It’s well past time we started honoring and taking care of our veterans, and I’m proud of the recently initiated changes to that end. Like Americans, Christians enjoy considerable freedoms in several areas. First, is freedom from guilt because our sins have been forgiven [Hebrews...
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who is trying to sell Americans on “Medicare for All” with the help of a new financing plan, should first have analyzed the dilemma in deep-blue New York, where a bill to replace private insurance with a single-payer system has stalled despite Democratic domination of all levels and levers of power. The mighty challenge here, where the New York Health Act is weighed down under questions about cost and practicality, suggests Warren’s plan could sink her chances should she advance to a general election against Presi...
I don’t know what to conclude from looking at voter turnout statistics from the New Mexico Secretary of State’s office for the Nov. 5 local elections. Quay County generated a turnout of 21 percent of registered voters — 1,219 voted out of 5,798 eligible. That’s just over one-in-five who voted. It seems the lower the population of surrounding counties, the higher voter participation was on Nov. 5. Guadalupe County to our west had a turnout of 33.4 percent — 1,088 voted out of 3,255 eligible. That’s a little better than one out of three. Unio...
If you’re a young child trapped in our infamous foster care system, your future is bleak. It’s likely that you’ll bounce around to more than a dozen foster homes until you “age out” at 18 and are allowed to live on your own. Then, within two years, there’s a six in 10 chance you’ll be living on the street, in jail or involved in sex trafficking. Being adopted by a loving family is the miracle any foster child hopes and prays for. But chances of that happening are tragically low. Only about 110,000 of the 400,000 children in government fo...
Tucumcari's volleyball team learned Sunday afternoon it had qualified for the state tournament, something the Lady Rattlers hadn't done in 30 years. Coach Dana Benavidez posted on social media a short video of her staff, players and parents at the Snake Pit watching a live internet feed of Class 3A state tournament selection show. When Tucumcari showed up in the tournament bracket, it prompted cheers, hugs and raised fists from those watching. "It's been a long time," Benavidez said. "There...
LOGAN - It appeared the Longhorns might be brewing an upset Friday night against top-seeded Tatum in the eight-man football semifinals, staking a 6-0 lead on quarterback Wyatt Wright's rushing and their defense stifling two Tatum drives. But Tatum returned an interception for a touchdown late in the period. That proved to be a harbinger of Logan's five turnovers and an echo of its loss last month to the Coyotes. Tatum scored 40 unanswered points en route to a 46-12 victory Friday. Tatum (10-1) w...
Five Tucumcari cross-country runners competed but did not medal at the Class 3A state championships Saturday at Rio Rancho High School. Coach Gary Hittson didn’t express disappointment with his athletes’ performances Saturday, saying: “I am very proud of this year’s team.” Erin Encinias was Tucumcari’s top runner, finishing 49th in the girls race in a time of 23 minutes, 14.25 seconds over the three-mile course. Lady Rattlers teammate A’leaya Lucero finished 69th in 25:15.25, and Lizet Castillo was 72nd in 25:46.85. Tucumcari didn’t have e...
MELROSE - In what may have been a preview of this week's Class 1A state volleyball championship, Melrose defeated Logan 25-19, 25-20, 25-12 in the District 6 tournament championship Saturday night. Melrose (19-0) and Logan (18-4) have been firmly planted in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, in the MaxPreps.com and coaches' polls in Class 1A for weeks. But Melrose has easily won its four matches this year against Logan - a turnaround from last season when the Lady Longhorns won four of...
Mesalands Community College boasts a nationally ranked intercollegiate rodeo team, and it now will have an intercollegiate golf team. The team will compete in the National Collegiate Club Golf Association (NCCGA). The move to add golf to Mesalands’ sports offerings had been expected for months, as college President John Groesbeck had long advocated forming a team. Mesalands has also hired a coach, Marty Garcia, who is recruiting golf team members for the spring 2020 semester. “This is a new endeavor for the college, and I look forward to the...
RIO RANCHO – Logan stunned top-seeded and previously unbeaten Melrose 25-16, 25-20, 25-20 in the Class 1A volleyball championship Saturday after the Lady Buffaloes mostly dominated the Lady Longhorns this season. Melrose was hoping to notch its seventh volleyball championship and its first undefeated season since 1983. Instead, a jubilant Logan squad delivered a three-peat in state championships to its coach, Robert Young, at the Santa Ana Star Center, including a title victory over Melrose l...
