  • Keeping the fire burning

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Sep 28, 2022

It was almost like the Fired Up festival never left. Teeming crowds, long lines and general enthusiasm for Tucumcari MainStreet's annual event Saturday at the city's historic railroad plaza mostly belied the three-year hiatus Fired Up took because of restrictions and uncertainties over the COVID-19 pandemic. Connie Loveland, executive director of Tucumcari MainStreet that puts on the festival, noted it wasn't apparent the long layoff had much of an effect. "It's comparable to what we've had...

  • Stay seasoned with the salt of Christ

    Leonard Lauriault, Religion columnist|Sep 28, 2022

My wife and I discussed reducing sodium in our diets. While humans need sodium for good health, we usually get more than we need, and too much of even any good thing is not good, except when it comes to God. Anyway, using a salt substitute or light salt was broached and hastily dismissed. I’d never used either product, but my wife and her parents had and quickly decided they had an unfavorable taste. The conversation then took a different direction as my wife asked about Jesus’ statement regarding our major Christian responsibility to be sal...

Quay County’s road supervisor told county commissioners on Monday he decided to close access to Airport Road from U.S. 54 northeast of Tucumcari while the notorious intersection undergoes construction for safety improvements. The intersection has been the site of numerous crashes in recent years, prompting pleas to the state from county commissioners to do something about it. Airport Road, k...

  • Take Putin nuclear threat seriously, but maybe not too seriously

    Bloomberg News, Syndicated content|Sep 28, 2022

Russian President Vladimir Putin has raised anew the possibility he might use nuclear weapons against Ukraine to prevail in a conflict going sideways. The smart money says he won’t, because doing so — or otherwise expanding the conflict drastically — wouldn’t make a bad situation any better. Yet the smart money might not have predicted the choices that set Putin down this path in the first place. Much of Putin’s televised speech last week was a repetition of the familiar. He again blamed the U.S., the North Atlantic Treaty Organizat...

  • Don't make enemies over politics

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Sep 28, 2022

Politics divides. If you distrust your neighbor because of political differences, it’s not your neighbor -- or you -- who’s at fault. It’s politics. Some would have you believe we are at war with each other, but your neighbors aren’t the enemy, even if they follow the enemy. Or if you do. Don’t let politics make you hate each other -- that would be a tragedy. I’ve heard people claim “everything is political.” This is not a healthy way of looking at life -- it’s not even a smart claim. Things are only political if someone makes them politi...

  • Ranked-choice better vote method

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Sep 28, 2022

If you ask me, a big reason why democracy in America is in trouble is because of the way we’ve set it up. First, there’s our Electoral College for electing presidents. By using state electors for selecting the overall winner through an antiquated Electoral College, instead of the majority of all voters, a lot of votes end up not mattering. For example, if you’ve been a Trump supporter in New Mexico, your vote for president in 2020 didn’t count toward the final tally that gave Biden the election. All of this state’s five electoral votes wen...

  • Logan wins wild one against Lady Rattlers

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Sep 28, 2022

LOGAN - The Lady Longhorns secured bragging rights over the Lady Rattlers this season, but players from both teams likely will be talking to their children and grandchildren about that wild second set of Saturday's non-district clash. Logan (7-5) prevailed in the three-set match for its second victory over Tucumcari this season. But what had spectators buzzing was a topsy-turvy second set the Lady Longhorns ultimately won by a 34-32 score. Sets, which require a two-point margin of victory,...

  • Disastrous series dooms Rattlers

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Sep 28, 2022

A disastrous sequence of five touchdowns allowed in a seven-minute span Friday spoiled Tucumcari's annual Homecoming game during a 56-0 loss to Robertson at Rattler Stadium. The game ended midway through the fourth quarter due to the mercy rule, but the Cardinals (3-2) had all but won the game against the Rattlers (0-6) before the first period ended. Tucumcari was hampered by five turnovers and only 29 yards of offense. The Rattlers' coaches knew their young team faced a tough task before...

    Staff report|Sep 28, 2022

The Logan football team had little trouble controlling host Dulce during a 60-6 Longhorns non-district victory Friday in eight-man football action. The game ended at halftime due to the mercy rule. Logan led 46-6 after one quarter. The Longhorns improved to 5-1 overall. The Hawks fell to 1-3. Logan coach Dwayne Roberts hadn’t compiled stats when contacted by phone Saturday but estimated that quarterback Kaeden Stoner threw for up to 300 yards against the Hawks. Those who scored TDs for the Longhorns were Stoner, Christian Kotara, Brock Burns, D...
