SAN JON - Members of the San Jon Municipal Schools board appeared to lean in favor of building two new gymnasiums for the forthcoming new school instead of preserving the current ones. Board members had initially wanted to keep the Ed Lee Activities Complex, aka the Ed Lee Gymnasium, and a 1960 gym that's used for plays and the annual carnival. But during a board work session last Monday with architects, project manager Ian Harmon cautioned about the downsides of trying to renovate an old...

Tucumcari residents will recognize many places in the film "On the Run" that recently debuted exclusively on Tubi TV. A production team from MarVista Entertainment earlier this year spent three weeks in Tucumcari and Quay County shooting the crime drama, which at the time had a title of "Unprotected." "On the Run," directed by the award-winning Traci Hays, is the tale of two sisters who learn of their family's involvement in a witness-protection program and go on the run from deadly members of...

He said it is likely the board will chose the new District 1 representative that night. Mark’s Gospel records this teaching: “And Jesus called them to him and said to them, ‘You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’” (Mark 10:42-45) The Greek word translated “great ones” there is megas, fro...
The death of an elderly Bernalillo County woman has been connected to a multistate outbreak of Listeria caused by Boar’s Head brand deli meats. Dozens of the brand’s varieties were ordered pulled from public sale nationwide by federal health officials last month. Listeria is a bacterial infection from contaminated foods that can cause intestinal illness. “In most cases, people exposed may experience no more than mild gastrointestinal illness,” said Dr. Miranda Durham, chief medical officer of the New Mexico Department of Health. “Howeve...

Chavez let attendees sound off on nearly 30 ideas to improve academics and other conditions at San Jon schools. They then were placed into groups of st...
Tucumcari’s police chief confirmed last Wednesday a Snapchat video showing police officers with a significant amount of cash is the subject of a police investigation. One of the captions with the video stated: “This is what we do with the drug money we confiscate.” At one point in the video, the money is tossed into the air. But TPD Chief Patti Lopez said the cash wasn’t confiscated from an arrest. Instead, she said, it was money that one of the officers won while gambling at a casino. Lopez described the video as “officers making poor choi...

More than 650,000 Americans experienced homelessness on any given night in 2023 -- a 12% increase since 2022. Chronic homelessness is also worsening, with over 143,000 people homeless for at least a year in 2023 -- an all-time high. I’ve been the mayor of Aurora, Colo. for five years. In my first term, I went undercover and lived among people experiencing homelessness in Aurora and Denver for a week. I wanted to understand why Colorado’s homeless community was growing and how my city could best help. The leading policy approach to hom...
My best friend Kelly and I frequently had loud, boisterous arguments over politics that led folks to believe that we disagreed about everything. They were mistaken. His views were influenced by watching Fox News, and mine are influenced by watching CNN, so that’s where the arguments would start. But they didn’t end there. It usually didn’t take long for both of us to call BS on the TV talking points and get to the heart of the matter. That didn’t always lead to an agreement, but it almost always led to a common understanding. Of course,...
Hollywood can’t always be trusted to accurately portray reality or history, to say the least. But I fully enjoyed watching the facts go by in the premier of “Reagan,” which I saw last week at the famous Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. “Reagan,” which stars Dennis Quaid as my father, covers my father’s career from Illinois lifeguard to the American president who set out to bankrupt the Soviet Union – and did it. It took an international team of freedom fighters like Maggie Thatcher and Pope John Paul II to bring down the USSR and end...

Lady Rattlers named to the all-tournament team were hitters Kyla Lopez, July Lafferty, Cambree Benavidez and libber Nevaeh Montoya. Setter Caylee Benavidez, a four-year starter at THS, was named Most Valuable Player. Tucumcari, ranked No. 2 in Class 2A by...
A slow start and penalties led the Tucumcari High School team falling behind early and losing a 35-23 non-district road game Saturday afternoon to Hozho Academy. The Wolves scored two quick touchdowns in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead. Meanwhile, a slew a penalties — including three straight holding calls — hampered the Rattlers. Tucumcari got on the scoreboard later in the period with a safety when Hozho’s quarterback threw the ball away from his end zone. The referees ruled it was intentional grounding, giving two points to the Rattl...
LOGAN - The Mustangs made it interesting for about 1 1/2 quarters, trailing only 20-19. But Logan's speed and hard-hitting defense wore down Mountainair, allowing the Longhorns to score 53 unanswered points during a 73-19 home-opening victory Friday in six-man football action. The game ended midway through the fourth quarter by the mercy rule. Haden Judd totaled 247 yards receiving and rushing with four touchdowns for the Longhorns (2-0).
