  • MainStreet makes Christmas tourism effort

    Ron Warnick|Sep 4, 2019

The new executive director of the Tucumcari MainStreet program wants to put the Christmas season on the city’s tourism radar. Connie Loveland, who took over the MainStreet post in June, announced last week a multipronged and coordinated effort called “A Very Merry Tucumcari” to make the city more of a holiday destination. First, Loveland said she wants to revive MainStreet’s Christmas Lamplighter initiative that began in 2015 but was set aside. The Lamplighter program seeks to put commercial Christmas decorations on lampposts along Tucumca...

  • Letter to the editor - Sept. 4

    Sep 4, 2019

Vote with your faith, conscience NBA legend Bob Cousy got the Medal of Freedom Award from President Trump. Now, Cousy offers an “assist” to Trump by saying he will vote for him in 2020 because he has racked up significant accomplishments. Trump signed an order to forgive student loan debt to about 25,000 disabled veterans. He has unwavering support for our wounded warriors and our troops. Trump says we cannot let those killed in El Paso and Dayton, Ohio, die in vain. He wants to get strong background checks. He doesn’t want to take away Secon...

  • Online debt-collection service implemented

    Staff report|Sep 4, 2019

An online service for resolving debt-collection lawsuits was implemented statewide by New Mexico courts this week, including Quay County. Online Dispute Resolution is a free service that allows both sides in a lawsuit to negotiate an agreement through private online messages from any location with internet access. The system works on all computers, smartphones and other mobile devices and is available 24 hours a day. “It is difficult and time-consuming for people in rural areas to travel long distances to a courthouse,” 10th Judicial Dis...

  • Take care in throwing things out

    Leonard Lauriault|Sep 4, 2019

We pick up trash along U.S. 54 about twice a year and, every once in a while, we find something of potential value and put into a separate bucket with recyclable plastics, cans, bottles, etc., for further inspection after the picking up is done (we also carry a trash bag). You know, one man’s garbage is another man’s gold; or, sometimes people get in a hurry and unintentionally throw out valuables. I found a nice, full toolbox at an illegal roadside garbage dump once while walking home from school. Anyway, during the most recent trash pick-up o...

25: City attorney Robert Rowley brought to attention to the Tucumcari City Commission that certain licensees have been or may be contemplating the Sunday sale of alcoholic beverages and that such sales are prohibited by city ordinance. Rowley said until the New Mexico Supreme Court rules otherwise, Tucumcari’s ban of alcohol sales between 2 a.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday remains valid and in effect. • Kay Terry, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Terry, last month finished 10th in the National Water Skiing Championships in Berkeley, Cal...

  • Release of video about truth, transparency

    Sep 4, 2019

When interim Fort Worth Police Chief Ed Kraus released video from cameras worn by officers involved in yet another fatal shooting last month, he made clear how unusual it was that the video was public within 24 hours of the incident. “I would hope that we don’t expect this in the future,” Kraus said. Sorry, Chief, but we do. We applaud Kraus and his commanders for swiftly addressing rumors about the shooting of Amari Malone. Fort Worth officers have shot six people, five fatally, since June 1, and when the person killed is again a young black...

  • The less info classified the better

    Steve Hansen|Sep 4, 2019

Former FBI Director James Comey was the subject last week of yet another Washington dust-devil involving what he might have said in some emails that he shouldn’t have said in emails. Once again, we’re talking about Hillary Clinton, who, of course, used her personal emails for state business, like a lot of high-ranking officials from both parties have done, and who may have also said some things in emails that shouldn’t have been mentioned in emails. These controversies are always raised by grandstanding senators and representatives who broad...

  • Time for Joe Biden to get off stage

    Sep 4, 2019

We got used to his serial gaffes long ago. “That’s just Joe,” his friends and supporters say about his latest gaffes today. I’m not one to make fun of him by calling him “Sleepy Joe” or any of his other nicknames, but now I’m starting to feel sorry for Biden. He’s showing signs of mental confusion. And he’s looking and acting way too old for his political aspirations. If I could talk to Biden, I’d tell him the truth everyone knows but doesn’t have the heart to say out loud: “Joe, face reality. It’s time to get off the stage. You don’t need any...

SAN JON - Lake Arthur scored on its first 11 possessions during a 77-32 victory over a shorthanded San Jon/Grady team Friday afternoon during the Coyotes' season opener in six-man football. "We've got to work on defense," San Jon/Grady coach Adrian Jones said after the game. "That just wasn't good enough. I...
