  • Teen's body recovered in Ute Lake

    Staff report|Aug 31, 2022

According to a news release, state police were sent at 9:53 a.m. Monday to Ute Lake for a 17-year-old boy who had gone into the water and not resurfaced. The state police dive team spent the day searching, suspended the search as darkness approached and resumed it at 6 a.m. Tuesday. About 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, the boy was found and was pronounced dead by the Office of the Medical Investigator. Because he was younger than 18, state police stated they will n...

  • City, MCC months late on audits

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Aug 31, 2022

Required financial audits of the City of Tucumcari and Mesalands Community College are more than eight months late, landing both on the state auditor’s at-risk list and the possibility of a loss of state funds. Stephanie Telles, director of the government accountability office for the New Mexico Office of the State Auditor, told the Quay County Sun in an email last week that Mesalands should have submitted an audit for fiscal year 2021 by Nov. 1. Telles also stated the City of Tucumcari should have submitted its FY2021 audit to the state by D...

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Aug 31, 2022

The co-owners of the Odeon Theatre in downtown Tucumcari were determined to reopen by Sept. 1, hell or high water. So it seems appropriate it will screen a film of the same name. • Social media needs to beef up threat follow-up

    St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Syndicated content|Aug 31, 2022

Congressional Democrats are demanding that social media companies do a better job of policing threats against the FBI in the wake of the agency’s search of former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence for classified documents that he took from the White House. The issue presents a crucial test of those companies’ ability to weed out dangerous speech without trampling on the First Amendment. If the companies don’t respond transparently to these demands and make a stronger effort than they are currently making to detoxify their sites,...

  • People have responsibility for actions

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Aug 31, 2022

Is it my imagination, or do many people run from responsibility as fast as they can? If you cause harm to a person’s life, liberty, or property you need to take responsibility. Don’t wait for someone else to hold you accountable. Step up and accept it. If it was an accident, it can’t be a real crime, no matter how bad it was or what government says. You still owe restitution, but government has no stake in the matter. It’s between you and the one you harmed. Punishment shouldn’t even be an option. It’s only if you refuse to take responsibil...

  • Battle between religion, science fought

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Aug 31, 2022

In the Great American Culture Wars of our time, two different worldviews, science and religion, continue to do battle, even though it doesn’t have to be that way. Science has reshaped our world in incredible ways. Digital technologies have come to dictate how we live our lives. Medical advancements are saving people from diseases and deformities that once killed off people by the thousands. And mathematics has turned our economy into a numbers game that doesn’t even require actual productivity to build wealth. “Necessity is the mother of inven...

  • Rattlers offense struggles in loss to Thoreau

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Aug 31, 2022

Tucumcari football coach Donnie Garcia was looking for progress after the opening-week loss at Jal, and he found it with his defense during the Rattlers' home opener Friday night against Thoreau. Tucumcari's offense remains a work in progress, however. The Rattlers D showed grit by forcing two turnovers and halting several Hawks drives. However, the Rattlers offense didn't get much going for a second straight week, and Thoreau kept plugging away with its run game to turn a 16-0 halftime lead...

  • Rattler runners compete in season opener at Clovis

    Staff report|Aug 31, 2022

The first meet of the season for Tucumcari High School cross-country runners was a learning experience not just for its athletes, but the coach. Virtually all of the Rattler runners this year are first-time participants in the sport. In addition, this is Tim Clark’s first time coaching such a team, replacing previous coach Gary Hittson after he became an assistant football coach. The Clovis Invitational on Friday wasn’t a meet full of creampuffs, either. “We were running against Carlsbad, Clovis, big schools ... and for our kids, it was their...

The New Mexico Racing Commission on Thursday declined to take action on Coronado Partners’ application for a horse-racing license, but there was no urgency to do so because both sides recently agreed to an extension on the decision. Warren Frost, a Logan-based lawyer for Coronado and one of its principals, said Friday his investor group and the racing commission mutually agreed on an extension for a decision on the application. The deadline for the commission to act now is Nov. 2, Frost said. The latest the commission could act on the applicati...

  • Allow God to cultivate you positively as a Christian

    Leonard Lauriault, Religion columnist|Aug 31, 2022

Monday is Labor Day, the last summer holiday, although most schools, including colleges and universities, already have started classes. So be careful of young people walking, running and playing on their way to school. Anyway, appropriate labor is a God-given gift for our good (Genesis 2:8-15; Ecclesiastes 5:18-20). Those refusing to do the work God prepared for them really miss out on the joy he wants for them in this life and the next (Ephesians 2:10). That joy from work includes successfully cultivating young minds to become productive...
