    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Aug 23, 2023

The Tucumcari City Commission during a special meeting last week approved its Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan for the fiscal years 2025 to 2029, with upgrades to basic services taking up the lion’s share of the lengthy list. The list over five fiscal years comprises 57 projects with a total cost of about $120 million. The prioritized plan serves as a wish list and guidance to the New Mexico Legislature in its annual awarding of capital outlay funds. Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Aug 23, 2023

A Tucumcari teen's 1990 GMC pickup truck doesn't look look much right now, sitting in a Tucumcari Automotive bay mostly disassembled. But within a couple of months, it will be a show truck that will be entered into the NSRA Southwest Street Rod Nationals in Oklahoma City. Truck owner David Olguin, 16, isn't bankrolling the rebuild through his part-time Pizza Hut job. Instead, Tucumcari Automotive owner Robert Moore has enlisted a growing number of local businesses and people to chip in with...

  • You must become small to be great

    Gordon Runyan, Religion columnist|Aug 23, 2023

One day, the disciples asked Jesus who was the greatest in the kingdom. These were motivated dudes, after all, wanting to know how to advance, how to climb that ladder. Jesus pointed to a child and told them to become like that. Some preachers have turned this text into a “How To Be Saved” sort of story. They think the disciples were asking about entrance to the kingdom, not status within it. So, the evangelistic answer is that we must have a so-called childlike faith. They don’t consider this in light of places where Jesus recommends a lot o...

    Aug 23, 2023

On this date ... 1973: The Tucumcari News was told the waters of the Municipal Pool at Five Mile Park, after being in “deplorable” condition, were “crystal clear and very inviting” — the best it had been all summer. The newspaper reported previous problems at the pool with the filtering system and chlorinator. Some painting and cleanup still were needed in the building that houses dressing rooms. The newspaper estimated a new pool would take $200,000 “to even begin, and it would not be anywhere near the size of the one we have.” It estimated...

  • Publisher's journal: Newspaper raid 'blatant overreach' and unconscionable

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Aug 23, 2023

You’ve probably heard the story by now. A small-town Kansas newspaper on Aug. 11 was raided by police who seized the paper’s computers and other electronic equipment. Newspaper officials claim the raid occurred because they had been looking into the background of the local police chief and other leaders in the county of about 12,000 people. Police claimed they had information that the newspaper was gathering information illegally and invading individuals’ privacy. Ironically, the newspaper reported little of the information it gathered in its p...

  • Take care with celebrity worship

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Aug 23, 2023

Voracious popular culture connoisseur that I am, I have been avidly following the drama surrounding pop icon Lizzo. As an academic who teaches race, gender and sexuality studies, the story has all the intersectional elements that make for a riveting story. Over the past couple of weeks, the Grammy award winning artist known for her hits “Truth Hurts,” “Jerome,” and “Exactly How Feel” has been embroiled in controversy and legal drama. Three of Lizzo’s tour dancers – Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez – have accused the singe...

  • Brazen criminality hurts racial relations

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Aug 23, 2023

Another week, another lame Trump indictment. Another week, another slimy Hunter Biden report. Another week, another smash-and-grab at a California mall. You can’t get away from this crummy stuff unless you turn off the TV, take the alerts off your phone and sleep all day on the beach for a week like Joe Biden. But I’m totally worn out by the never-ending troubles and crimes of Trump and Hunter. Nothing that happens to either of them in a courtroom months or years from now will hurt me, cut high gas prices or make my family safer. What con...

  • Rattlers rally past Chiefs

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Aug 23, 2023

The Tucumcari football team and its fans did a lot of celebrating late Friday at Rattler Stadium. Then again, if you'd won your first game in almost two years, you'd do a lot of celebrating, too. The Rattlers, anchored by a stout defense that forced six turnovers, scored five unanswered touchdowns in the second half to roll to a season-opening 32-6 victory over Mescalero Apache. It marked a successful debut for new Tucumcari head coach Tarik Embrack. Tucumcari sophomore back Daymion Urioste...

Sisters Caylee and Cambree Benavidez led the Lady Rattlers with nine kills each. Haisley Huffman added six kills. July Lafferty added four blocks, and Kirksey Smith totaled three service aces. Tucumcari coach Dana Benavidez said it was only the second time her team has defeated perennially tough Fort Sumne...

Here's how it happened: The Longhorns, after securing the opening kickoff, ran nine plays for 58 yards. Quarterback Brock Burns finished the drive by connecting on a 9-yard touchdown pass to Devin Kotara for a 6-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, the Cougars' returner let the bouncing ball get behind him, then slipped trying to pick it up near...

San Jon’s volleyball team dropped its match 11-25, 15-25, 25-22, 15-25 on Saturday to a taller Roy-Mosquero squad, but the Lady Coyotes’ coach saw encouraging signs with his team. Sarah Archuleta — San Jon’s only senior — led the team with four kills, and teammate Addie Lafferty added three. Dakota Fisher made six assists and served 12 points during the match. The non-district matchup at San Jon was the season opener for both teams. San Jon only has eight varsity players on its roster, and only six suited up Saturday. Meanwhile, first-yea...
