    Steve Hansen, Correspondent|Aug 23, 2017

By Steve Hansen QCS Correspondent The 2017 Quay County Fair showed again what happens when the efforts of a few hundred kids combine with the time and patience of parents and other adult volunteers and a carnival for summer's last event before school starts. For the kids, high school age and under, it culminated a year of watering, feeding, weeding, cleaning, and dozens of other chores. The fair is where their fruits and vegetables, but mostly their animals, come to judgment. Judges turned...

  • Permanent funds not meant for 'rainy day' raids

    Albuquerque Journal|Aug 23, 2017

A bullish stock market and improved oil revenues boosted New Mexico’s largest permanent funds by $2.1 billion last fiscal year, meaning an extra $61 million will go into state coffers this fiscal year, which began July 1. And like a kid in a candy story waiting for his/her allowance, there is a faction of New Mexicans already planning how to spend it. That’s understandable. But what’s worrisome are the community activists and legislators who will undoubtedly start lobbying early and often to spend more of the $22.3 billion in the Land Grant Per...

  • Our history should not be denied

    Steve Hansen, Columnist|Aug 23, 2017

If I were African-American, I would think slavery was the only significant issue of the Civil War, because everyday experience would demonstrate that the racism that began with slavery is alive and well in the U.S.A. Honoring the Confederacy would only be honoring racism, if I were African-American. Being white, and therefore not a daily victim of racism, at least in the U.S.A., I am able to take a broader view of the Civil War. I can see there were other issues besides slavery, chief among them the sovereignty of the individual states. The...

  • Rally security a miserable failure

    Rube Render, Columnist|Aug 23, 2017

Forty years ago, the American Civil Liberties Union went to court to defend the right of Nazis to march through Skokie, Illinois. The ACLU defended the group’s right to free speech based on the same laws it had raised during the Civil Rights era when officials tried to stop civil rights marches throughout the South. Recently in Charlottesville, Virginia, the ACLU also supported the “Unite the Right” organization in court when city officials tried to revoke their permit to protest. Whether you a...
