  • God's care for us always brings about good

    Leonard Lauriault QCS columnist|Aug 21, 2012

While on vacation this summer, at a road construction zone in Missouri was a sign saying, "Don't barrel through work zones – MODOT cares." "That's nice," I thought smugly as I drove the reduced speed limit leading a line of antsy drivers. Shortly thereafter was a billboard saying, "New Life Evangelistic Center Cares." The coincidence struck me so I kept reading signs just to see who else cared. I didn't see any more such signs, but that doesn't mean no one else cares. Some people's care seems to do more harm than good. Tongue-in-cheekly, Mark 5...

  • Editorial: Tenth Circuit model of fiscal responsibility

    Albuquerque Journal|Aug 21, 2012

Shame on the Department of Veterans Affairs for drawing a cloud of suspicion over what should be an honored organization that serves our military men and women. And kudos to the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals for restoring a fiscal measure of confidence in the judiciary. The VA is under investigation for possibly squandering $9 million on exorbitant human-resources training conferences last year and violating ethics rules by taking booze, concert tickets and spa treatments from vendors. Contrast that with the Tenth Circuit — including New M...

  • Elida brothers will be missed

    Aug 21, 2012

One minute two brothers are on a community mission, the next a whole community is wondering how they'll get by without them. The hurting was focused on the community of Elida recently as Ronald and Fred Anthony died in a truck accident while fetching a load of sand for a new playground at their church. The shock went well beyond the village of Elida, though. Farming and ranching was in their blood but the extended Anthony families also made a living operating the school bus contract for Elida Schools. Those bus rides put them in touch daily...

  • Midway carnival adds glamour to fair

    Thomas Garcia QCS senior writer|Aug 21, 2012

Bright neon lights, the sound of milk bottles being knocked over with a proclamation of, "We have a winner," and the smell of funnel cakes brought back a lot of great memories for me this weekend. The Quay County Fair is an annual event, which — if my memory serves me — has gone for at least five years without a full midway. That's the fairgoer term for the rides, food vendors and game booths. There are always our regular events which have come to be tradition, such as the Shepherd's Lead, live stock shows, horseshow and exhibit hall. But a m...

  • Comments from the Canyons: County fairs remain important

    Lynn Moncus QCS columnist|Aug 21, 2012

Let's thank all those people who participated in the Quay County Fair. Their efforts and talents are most definitely appreciated. Although the drought adversely affected the produce exhibits, we did get to see some results of major efforts to have gardens in the area. Fairs have been popular in our county since the days before statehood, and we can but hope they will remain so. In those early days, many of the communities had their own fairs before the county fair got under way. They even had their parades to celebrate the occasion. Although...
