  • Friends: Reporter's lust for life his legacy

David Stevens, Eastern New Mexico News|Aug 15, 2018

TUCUMCARI — He was always joking. He had the kindest heart. He was a legend around Quay County. The tributes to Thomas Garcia could fill a newspaper. The longtime senior writer for the Quay County Sun died Saturday afternoon following a brief illness. His legacy, according to dozens of friends, will be his sense of humor, dedication to community, and friendly disposition. "He took his job seriously. But he was the office joker, no doubt," said Veronica Montano, a co-worker who's known Garcia h... Full story

    QCS Staff|Aug 15, 2018

There may be a bit more sheen at the Quay County Fair, which starts today and runs through Saturday, with the addition of competition in artistic metal-smithing categories in arts and crafts. Another new event will be an offering of free ice cream sundaes at 10 a.m. Saturday at south end of the Fair Barn. A flyer promoting the new competition said metal-crafted items including, among others, belt buckles, bridle bits, bracelets, rings, spurs, earrings and knives. The fair will generally follow its usual schedule of events, shows, and...

  • Loki has easy solution for us

    Gordan Runyan|Aug 15, 2018

In the first Avengers movie, there is a scene in which the villain, Loki, forces a crowd of people to kneel before him, and then gives a short speech. He says this: “Is not this simpler? Is this not your natural state? It’s the unspoken truth of humanity, that you crave subjugation. The bright lure of freedom diminishes your life’s joy, in a mad scramble for power, for identity. You were made to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel.” Our heroes save the day, of course; but, the cringe-...

  • Letters to the editor - Aug. 15

    Aug 15, 2018

Leaders can't ignore global warming much longer The wild weather the world has been experiencing was known to be coming some time ago. The scientific community tried to warn our leaders but was ignored by most. Our political leaders heeded the call of money and getting elected instead of what was in the long-term interest of the planet and human civilization. The trend to a hotter environment is clear: 17 of the 18 hottest years since record keeping began have occurred since 2001. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will cause global temperature...

  • Commission: Hospital gross receipt tax appears on ballot

    Steve Hansen|Aug 15, 2018

It’s not a new tax. That is the key message that Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital officials and Quay County Commissioners want voters to hear before they vote on continuing the one-eighth percent gross receipts tax that raises about $200,000 a year to operate the hospital as a county facility. Hospital administrators and county commissioners said they were concerned about the tax measure being misread as a new tax, because the tax will be on the ballot for a general election for the first time since the tax was first approved in a special e...

  • Disc golf course named after late commissioner Robert Lumpkin

    Steve Hansen|Aug 15, 2018

Tucumcari’s new disc golf course at Five-Mile Park has been officially named for the city commissioner who championed it, Robert Lumpkin, who passed away on July 17. The Tucumcari City Commission voted unanimously Thursday to name the championship-level 18-hole course in Lumpkin’s honor. Lumpkin promoted the idea for the golf course, starting in 2017, and contributed to organizational efforts and even physical labor to clear the way for the disc golf course’s 18 holes and tee-off areas. The commission on Thursday also approved an agree...

  • Debate is welcome, but investors decide if ponies get to run

    Eastern New Mexico News|Aug 15, 2018

Critics site the potential for more crime, more poverty and more opportunity for addiction. Proponents point to economic benefits and “something fun to do.” They’re both right, of course. Horse races outside a casino — or racino — would bring more people, possibly more trouble, and certainly more entertainment to eastern New Mexico. But while all voices are welcome on this issue, those that should matter most belong to the New Mexico Racing Commission — which ultimately decides who, if anyone, will receive the state’s sixth racino licens...

  • Sun fixture gone way too soon

    Steve Hansen|Aug 15, 2018

Thomas Garcia could be exasperating, frustrating and aggravating at times, but it was seldom that he was anything but cordial, cheerful and persuasive. It was easy to tell that Garcia was most in his element when he was among friends, keeping them entertained with a steady stream of stories, wisecracks and come-back lines. Many of those friends and I, a one-time colleague who learned quickly that supervising Thomas Garcia was akin to herding his famous cats, were shattered to learn Saturday that he had passed away. He’d been ill in recent d...

  • Familiar face takes lead

Jamie Cushman, Eastern New Mexico News|Aug 15, 2018

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. - Yes, that was a familiar name announced last month as the new commander/leader of the United States Air Force Thunderbirds. Lt. Col. John Caldwell was stationed at Cannon Air Force Base from 2005 to 2007. He was selected to head up the group of 12 Thunderbird pilots who perform awe-inspiring aerial demonstrations all over the country. "It's a very unique opportunity, I'm very excited about it," Caldwell said in a telephone interview last week. "I'm also honored and...

  • Ag program pairs old hands with new ones

    Steve Hansen|Aug 15, 2018

A program to match apprentice farmers with experienced farmers willing to donate time and land in Quay County is well-timed, according to Jason Lamb, the county's New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension agent. A decade of drought discouraged many young people from entering agriculture or following in their families' footsteps by continuing to farm in Quay County, Lamb said in an interview at an organizing event Friday at the Tucumcari Convention Center for an apprentice farming...
