David Grieder, Eastern New Mexico News|Aug 1, 2018

For Warren Frost, confident in Tucumcari’s qualifications for the state’s next racino, it’s “the more the merrier.” That was his reaction to Monday’s news that eight groups have applied to the New Mexico Racing Commission for a racetrack/casino. Of the entities that submitted “letters of intent,” by the deadline at end of business day Monday, three had eyes for Clovis, two for Raton, and one each for Tucumcari, Las Vegas and Lordsburg. Final applications are due Aug. 17 for the state’s sixth and final racino license, which has gone unused s...

  • Truth of God is certain, trustworthy

    Gordan Runyan|Aug 1, 2018

How do you know what you know? Can you be certain about what you think you know? Is there genuine truth, and would you recognize it if it passed by? These questions sound like juvenile brain-teasers. They are, however, pretty important if we are going to be mature thinkers. Here are some more: Since scientists in America are holding symposiums on the question of whether or not our reality is really real; and, since shining lights such as Neil Degrasse Tyson have suggested there’s a 50-50 c...

  • China's power move on Taiwan political bullying

    Chicago Tribune|Aug 1, 2018

We’re searching for a description of the Chinese government’s behavior and can’t decide among bullying, extortion or coercion. The White House went with “Orwellian nonsense.” Geopolitical chutzpah also comes to mind. What Beijing did was demand that international airlines — including United, American and Delta — change their websites to pretend Taipei is no longer the capital of Taiwan. Because China claims Taiwan as Chinese territory, it doesn’t want to see any references contradicting that assertion. Therefore, book a flight on United and T...

  • Media not your enemy, Mr. Prez

    Steve Hansen|Aug 1, 2018

On July 20, President Donald Trump sat down with New York Times Publisher Arthur Gregg Sulzberger. At Trump’s request, this meeting was “off the record.” Sulzberger is 37 years old. The president, at 72, is almost twice Sulzberger’s age. On Sunday, the one who is old enough to know better fired up the Twitter account — by which we get real-time impulses, not deliberations, from the world’s most powerful human — to break the “off-the-record” agreement. Trump tweeted he had met with Sulzberger to discuss “the vast amounts of Fake News being put...
