  • USDA faces budget cuts

    Thomas Garcia - Eamon Scarbrough, Staff writers|Jun 28, 2017

The looming possibility of cuts to the U.S. Department of Agriculture isn’t what farmers in Eastern New Mexico want to see, but if spending on welfare and food assistance programs share the cuts, they say they are willing to face them. The proposed USDA 2018 budget, unveiled in May, shows plans to cut $4.8 billion from the agency, a 21 percent cut. The USDA funds a wide range of programs from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to subsidies for crop insurance. New restrictions on the subsidies will limit insurance premium subsidies t...

    Thomas Garcia, Staff writer|Jun 28, 2017

A way to go out on top and a push to improve and set new records were what a few of the 3A track and field state champion Tucumcari Rattlers said Monday of receiving their state championship rings. It was the best possible outcome, considering we thought we had tied for third, said Billy Sandoval, a 2017 graduate. Sandoval said winning a state championship his senior year is exactly how he wanted to go out, "on a high note." For junior Xavier Garcia and sophomore Seth Martinez said, a state...

  • State tax rates 'absolutely matter' to biz interests

    Albuquerque Journal|Jun 28, 2017

It would be easy to take the simplistic view that lowering New Mexico’s top corporate income rate from 7.6 percent to 5.9 percent over a five-year period as part of a 2013 business tax overhaul is costing New Mexico a lot of money. It would also be wrong. Corporate tax collections have dipped from $281 million in fiscal 2012 to a projected $118 million in fiscal 2017. Critics of the overhaul, which also included getting rid of the so-called single sales factor, point to the numbers and say if the goal was to encourage job growth, it has been a...

  • Look forward to make U.S. better

    Steve Hansen, Columnist|Jun 28, 2017

It will never be 1962 again, but there are some highly placed people who want it to return or have never left that year. Our current president, Donald Trump, wants to return manufacturing jobs to the U.S., return Cuba to its Communist enemy status and rebuild the military to Cold War levels. Just like things were in 1962. Even the president cannot reverse globalization and automation, the two forces that have had the worst effects on U.S. manufacturing jobs, which made the U.S a great place to live in 1962. We should keep looking for ways to...

  • Clinton only one with useful secrets

    Rube Render, Columnist|Jun 28, 2017

When Sally Yates testified before a Senate judiciary sub-committee, her bombshell was not that National Security Advisor Michael Flynn had lied to his bosses about speaking to Russian officials. Her big news was that the Russians could use this information to blackmail Flynn. Yates’ testimony was backed up by the former director of national intelligence, James Clapper, who told the sub-committee that Moscow could use this type of information as leverage against Flynn and that, “This is a cla...

  • Quay County All-Stars fall to Roosevelt

    Thomas Garcia, Staff writer|Jun 28, 2017

After an early rally to tie the game, the Quay County Minor League All-Stars fell 14-8 Monday to the Roosevelt County All-Stars at Tucumcari. The game was a lot closer than the score showed, said Cole Wallin, Quay County head coach. The Quay All-Stars were down 4-0 in the bottom of the second with two outs when Joshua Griego connected with a fastball and got on base. "I just watched the ball and knew I had to get a hit," Griego said. Griego stole second base and advance to third base on a wild...

  • Freedome in America, heaven carries responsibilities

    Leonard Lauriault, Religion columnist|Jun 28, 2017

‘My country ‘tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrim’s pride. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.” The year is nearly half over and Independence Day will be celebrated next week. Because it falls on Tuesday this year, many might take Monday off to make it a four-day celebration, although, I wonder how many will actually meditate on our nation’s history and the freedoms we enjoy. They might just view it as another opportunity to free themselves of the daily grind of work. Ame...
