  • Commission bans some aerial fireworks

    Steve Hansen, Correspondent|Jun 20, 2018

A ban on some fireworks for 30 days received final approval Thursday from the Tucumcari City Commission. District 1 Commissioner Ralph Moya cast the lone “no” vote because, he said the ban came after many fireworks dealers had already received airborne fireworks for resale. The main reason for the ban, other commissioners said, was the continuation of severe drought conditions in the county, despite a few recent rainstorms. The ban is limited to missile-type rockets, helicopters, aerial spinners and stick-type rockets, and does not cover all...

  • Thank Sessions for unwittingly aiding pot effort

    Los Angeles Times|Jun 20, 2018

Good job, Jeff Sessions. It seems the attorney general’s misguided attempts to revive the unpopular and unjust federal war on marijuana may be having the exact opposite effect — prompting a new bipartisan effort in Congress to allow states to legalize cannabis. This month, Sen. Cory Gardner. R-Colorado, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, introduced a bill that would essentially end the federal prohibition in states that have chosen to permit medical or recreational marijuana under their own laws. In an unexpected boost for the bil...

  • Biases against Trump not political

    Steve Hansen, Columnist|Jun 20, 2018

I don’t know what to make of the Horowitz report, which President Donald Trump hoped would show that Hillary Clinton was a criminal and the FBI was biased, and therefore, his campaign did not collude with the Russians. (Anybody miss that non sequitur, I mean, besides the president?) The New York Times and Washington Post say the Horowitz report makes everybody look bad, but it shows that the FBI was not politically motivated in its investigations of Russia’s possible involvement with the Trump campaign. The report does nothing to discredit Rob...

  • God's word the standard of justice

    Gordan Runyan, Religion columnist|Jun 20, 2018

It’s a rare occurrence: A passage of Scripture was thrust into the national spotlight last week, as spokespersons for the Trump administration broke out Romans 13:1-7 as the moral authority for civil government to carry out the “law.” That word is in quotation marks, because the whole discussion has begged the question, “What law are we talking about?” What if the law in question is itself unjust? Does Romans 13 mean government should enforce injustice? This topic is near to my heart. I have me...

  • Letters to the editor - June 20

    Jun 20, 2018

Republican majority will mean swift death to needed healthcare The coming midterm elections should not be promoted as conservative vs. liberals, or Republicans vs. Democrats, but as life or death for those with pre- existing conditions or those of us who could enter that category in the future. If Republicans maintain their majority you can kiss healthcare goodbye. They refused to cooperate in establishing the Affordable Care Act from the start and have been lying about it ever since. The purpose of government is to do the will of the people....

  • High temps, low moisture pose fire danger

    Thomas Garcia, Staff writer|Jun 20, 2018

Recent rainfall across the county brought temperatures down and provided a short relief but the danger of wildfires is still very high, said Donald Adams, Quay County Fire Marshall. “The moisture in the ground is going to dry up quickly as the temperatures rise,” Adams said. “The dry conditions along with the abundant fuel source creates a high danger for wildfires.” On Friday, a storm system moved into the region as a high pressure system shifted to the east, said David Craft of the National Weather Service in Albuquerque. Craft said sub tro...
