Aly Marques' life has been more difficult than most. The former Forrest resident (2003-2010) had her first heart surgery to repair a leaky valve when she was 9 days old, said her great aunt, Laurie Haskell. In 2003, when she was 7, she was living with her father in Killeen, Texas, when he committed suicide. In January 2010, she was a passenger in a car that collided with a snow plow and left her with a broken collarbone and wrist. In March, she passed out at her Clovis home and was rushed to the hospital emergency room, where it was learned...

"...I am fearfully and wonderfully made..." Psalm 139:14 The last few weeks I thought we were running a kitten nursery around our house. Three stray mother cats each had kittens. We didn't see them for a long time but eventually they started darting around the garage. The mother cats were weaning them and ready for them to go. I don't mind a couple of cats around to take care of the mice, but I didn't need that many kittens. It was fairly easy to catch the first six kittens and each of them went to a good home. One kitten wasn't so compliant...
A 16-year-old Clovis girl, missing since June 7, had thoughts of running away prior to her disappearance, according to a supplemental police report provided on Tuesday. Aly Marques also had been in contact with an Albuquerque-area woman affiliated with a church group and "mentions she might visit when school is out," the police report shows. Aly disappeared from her Clovis home on June 7 and hasn't been seen since, family members say. Aly Marques Laurie Haskell, Aly's aunt and guardian, has... Full story
While Janie Stith and her relatives were going through items left to them by Mrs. Sue Tucek, they found a letter I had written to Mrs. Tucek in 1952. As a graduating senior, I was applying for a Delta Kappa Gamma scholarship. The letter was most definitely from a teenager who was dreaming of the future. At that time, neither of us even imagined I would be teaching Business Writing at New Mexico State University a few years later. As I look at this letter, I see one which would not have received a very high grade in that class. Although the... Full story
Many people whose father has passed on can tell wonderful stories of all the places their dad took the family on vacation. I would say our family only took one traditional vacation while I was growing up. That's not to say my father never took us anywhere. It's just that wherever that Terry-style vacation took us, it had to meet some pretty strict requirements for dad. Number one, it couldn't interfere with any irrigating, harvest or major job prospect. Since much of that time he was either farming or custom harvesting that was more than...
The White House is a busy place, what with compiling that "kill list" for terrorists and developing a cyberweapons strategy against Iran. So is the Justice Department, what with flirting with being held in contempt of Congress over withheld information on the bungled Fast and Furious weapons operation. So President Barack Obama and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder should clear a little time on their BlackBerry schedules and consider having an independent special counsel investigate recent national security leaks. It is ludicrous to entrust a... Full story
