Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Jun 12, 2024

The man charged with killing New Mexico State Police Patrolman Justin Hare in March threatened healthcare workers while he was being treated for injuries after his capture. Jaremy Smith, 33, of South Carolina, also threatened a former girlfriend and a travel companion before Hare was killed. And he is accused of entering an empty ranch house near Newkirk, where he ate food and stole ammunition, cash and a pickup truck before being shot and apprehended by police in Albuquerque a day later. Those...

  • Tax board receptive fireworks aid request

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Jun 12, 2024

The Tucumcari Lodgers Tax Advisory Board seemed amenable to an aid request from the Logan-Ute Lake Chamber of Commerce for its Fourth of July fireworks show, scheduled for July 6. Mayor Mike Cherry, the board’s liaison, said Logan will spend $20,000 on its fireworks display, hence the request. The pyrotechnics will be set off in sequence by professionals, he said. However, Logan didn’t submit a specific amount of funding it wanted from the board. Because of that, board Chairman Matt Bednorz suggested the request be ultimately decided by the...

  • Manager wants prioritize courthouse windows

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Jun 12, 2024

Quay County’s manager said he was inclined to move up priority of replacing the courthouse windows on its Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan. The county commission on Monday held a public hearing on updating the five-year plan, which serves as a guide and wish list for capital outlay funding from the New Mexico Legislature. County manager Daniel Zamora said the county spends $3,000 to $5,000 a month on electricity in the courthouse, which also holds other county offices. He said new windows would improve its energy efficiency. Last y...

    Staff report|Jun 12, 2024

With the recent erection of a fuel canopy, the new truck stop under construction on South First Street and Interstate 40 in Tucumcari was starting to take shape last week. The site at 3022 S. First St. is slated by this fall to be a One9 station, part of the Pilot and Flying J network. Ian Terry, construction superintendent at the site, said in a telephone interview that work began on the undeveloped piece of land in early April. He said it's on track to open in early September, barring any cons...

  • Bible: Are you too hurt to believe?

    Gordon Runyan, Religion columnist|Jun 12, 2024

“Pastor, all that stuff you talk about is fine for you, all that Gospel stuff. But I live in the real world. I’ve learned that promises are made to be broken. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times it’s happened to me, but I can show you the scars. When a thing sounds too good to be true, it is. I need real help, and all you’ve got for me is pie-in-the-sky fairy talk.” Maybe you’ve never said or thought something like that. Well, I have. I’ve been hurt so deeply that when people repeated to me the promises of God, they did not strike...

  • Rawhide Days festival returns this weekend

    Staff report|Jun 12, 2024

The 2024 edition of Tucumcari Rawhide Days this weekend will take on more of a historical emphasis with, appropriately enough, much of the action at the Tucumcari Historical Museum. The other western-themed activities, including a youth ranch rodeo and barrel racing, will take place at the Quay County Fairgrounds arena. Rawhide Days takes its inspiration from the late 1950s and early 1960s television western series, “Rawhide,” starring Tucumcari native Paul Brinegar and a young Clint Eastwood. Portions of “Rawhide” also were shot on ranches...

  • Despite problems, California still a trendsetter

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Jun 12, 2024

I must admit to a certain grudge against Californians who come rolling into New Mexico with an attitude of superiority over us poor souls. It’s a prejudice I developed after a few years living in the Land of Enchantment, after seeing more than enough arrogant Californians coming in and trying to tell the rest of us how best to live and behave. I’ve held the same grudge against Texas, but developed it years earlier while growing up in Arkansas. But I felt my own attitude of superiority when, within just a few years: the Razorbacks exited the...

  • Trump trial DA deserves a bow

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Jun 12, 2024

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg deserves to take a bow following his undeniable victory. A New York jury delivered a guilty verdict in a trial largely devoid of political theater and intense media upheaval. That’s thanks to a judge who, during the multiple-week trial, managed to maintain civility and order and ensure the rights of all parties were upheld fairly. Former President Trump was convicted on not one, not two, but 34 felony counts. Supporters are outraged. Detractors are pleased. From the moment he brought a criminal case a...

  • Bidens have bad week in media

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Jun 12, 2024

It was a good week for the Reagan family. Not so much for the Biden clan. Last Wednesday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, where my father is buried, there was a fine ceremony to mark the 20th year of his passing and recall the conservative principles that powered his domestic and foreign successes. And on Thursday, when the library marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day, it also celebrated the famous speech my father gave 40 years ago when he traveled to Normandy to honor the brave Americans who hit the beaches on June 6, 1944. Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Jun 12, 2024

City officials and two members of an accounting firm gave a status update during a special commission work session Wednesday on efforts to reconcile the city’s finances as far back as 2022. City manager Paula Chacon said she, finance director Hallie Ferguson and Liz Martinez and Angelica Pacheco, client services managers of Mitchell, Beasley & Co. CPA of Las Cruces, have identified many deposits and credits, with only two debits they have been unable to find, from December 2022. “I think we’ve made a lot of progress,” Chacon said. “We’re...

  • TableTop Cooperative loses its state grant

    Staff report|Jun 12, 2024

The locally based TableTop Cooperative recently lost a nearly $25,000 state grant that would have enabled it to buy a walk-in cooler to store produce and increase its ability to sell it to a larger region. The loss of that grant also scuttled its ability to secure a federal grant of up to $40,000 to buy food processing equipment, said the co-owner of Tucumcari plant nursery La Casa Verde, one of the cooperative’s key members. The New Mexico Economic Development Department in February announced the $24,740.03 Healthy Food Financing Award for t...

  • Byrd captures GOP nod for county assessor

    Staff report|Jun 12, 2024

Jefferson Byrd defeated James Kleinsasser for the Republican nomination for Quay County assessor during light turnout last Tuesday in the primary election. Byrd, 52, a rancher and windmiller from rural Tucumcari, earned a total of 466 votes in the county - 128 more than Kleinsasser, 63, a chief deputy assessor who lives in Tucumcari. That represented 58% of the vote for Byrd. Byrd won all precincts in the county. He faces current officeholder and Democratic nominee Dana Leonard in November's...

  • TPS budget includes $3.3 million cash carryover

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Jun 12, 2024

Members of the Tucumcari Public Schools board last Monday approved a $15.1 million operating budget for 2024-2025 that includes a $3.3 million carryover when the fiscal year begins on July 1. The cash will prove critical, as Tucumcari will have to absorb costs on a few teachers and aides that were covered by coronavirus relief funds. The federal Elementary and Secondary Emergency Relief Fund required 20% of it to be spent on academics. Those funds will sunset in December. When pressed by board members how much the district would have to...

  • Logan launches Ute tourism campaign

    Staff report|Jun 12, 2024

The Village of Logan has officially launched its first tourism campaign for Ute Lake, coining the slogan "the best lake you've never been to." The village also launched a new website, VisitUteLake.com, that provides potential visitors local fishing reports, where to eat, places to stay and more. Funding for the campaign came, in part, from a $15,000 outdoor marketing grant announced in March from the New Mexico Economic Development Department. The grant also is being used to print pamphlets and...
