  • Lawmakers address issues

    Kevin Wilson|Jun 12, 2019

Be it a senator or a representative, Republican or Democrat, representatives of Quay County assured their constituents the challenges faced in Tucumcari were the same challenges in pretty much every city they represent. The populations are dwindling and aging, but the population that remains needs upgraded infrastructure and adequately funded schools. A key, Sen. Pete Campos, D-Las Vegas, said at Thursday's legislator forum at the Tucumcari Convention Center, was for the communities of rural...

  • Hope Sixth and Hines stays forever

    Kevin Wilson|Jun 12, 2019

I don't get out to Tucumcari as much as I would like. Nearly every time I've been there, it was for a work related reason, and we have staff in Tucumcari far more competent than me to handle Quay County news. But I have good memories of the time I was interim managing editor there for four months while we searched for a long-term editor. The Rattler basketball team made the state tournament for the first time in more than a decade, the police chief wore his Atlanta Braves gear on casual Fridays...

  • Unfair to yoke compassion to legal wrangling

    Jun 12, 2019

For Teresa Todd, kindness was a crime. Todd, the Jeff Davis County attorney and mother of four, was driving one February evening in West Texas when three young migrants flagged her down. Seeing that one appeared ill, she invited them to come into her car out of the cold. As she was texting friends for advice, a sheriff’s deputy stopped and asked her to step out of the car. Todd spent almost an hour in a holding cell that night before she was released and became the subject of an ongoing federal investigation. The question of whether to aid ille...

  • Need more intellectual humility

    Steve Hansen|Jun 12, 2019

There’s a lot of talk these days about “intellectual humility,” which most consider a virtue. It means you will occasionally admit when you’re wrong. It also means you’re open to new ideas, even from those who you think are wrong and learn from the experiences of people you disagree with. I try. President Donald Trump, the ultimate practitioner of intellectual arrogance, has a few ideas I actually agree with, even though, having never met the man, I hold him in deep disdain. I like the fact that he’s treating China like an enemy. I wish he’d t...

  • Latest Anaya offering defies genre

    Tom McDonald|Jun 12, 2019

If I had to assign a genre to Rudolfo Anaya’s latest book, “Chupacabra Meets Billy The Kid,” I’d say it’s of the Western / science fiction / fantasy / Chicano literature / historical fiction genre, as if there’s such a thing. Maybe “unique” is a better description, because that’s certainly the way this outside-the-box tale reads. And to the contrary, I’d describe its Guadalupe and Lincoln county settings as realistically descriptive … well, except for the wormhole along the Pecos. Anaya, best known for his groundbreaking book, “Bless Me, Ulti...

  • Pray for America to be united again

    Leonard Lauriault|Jun 12, 2019

This Friday, June 14, is National Flag Day (usflag.org/history/flagday.html). The American flag is a symbol of unity with reminders for the present (a star for each of the current 50 states) and our origin (a stripe for each of the original 13 colonies who declared their/our independence from tyranny and who developed the Constitution of the United States by which we have existed as a nation and probably only by which we can continue to do so). Although no official declaration has been made about the colors except the specific colors...
