    Ron Warnick|May 22, 2024

Quay County's sheriff fatally shot a rural Tucumcari man who was brandishing a firearm at healthcare personnel and law enforcement officers on May 14. Sheriff Dennis Garcia volunteered the information about his involvement during a phone interview two days after the shooting of Aubrey James Osteen, 77, at Osteen's home on Quay Road 49 about a dozen miles south of Tucumcari. "Because I was involved, I feel the I need to be transparent about it," Garcia said in a phone interview with the Quay...

  • Injunction halts PED's 180-day rule

    the Staff of The News|May 22, 2024

ROSWELL — A district court judge last Monday granted an injunction prohibiting the New Mexico Public Education Department from implementing its 180-day school calendar. District Judge Dustin K. Hunter of Roswell stated in his ruling that the injunction will remain in effect “pending final determination of the merits of this cause.” More than 50 school districts, including all in Quay County, joined the lawsuit challenging the rule. They argue the mandate would result in budget shortfalls, essentially eliminate four-day school weeks that have...

  • Odeon Theatre lands new local owners

    Staff report|May 22, 2024

The historic Odeon Theatre in downtown Tucumcari marked a change in ownership Friday with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and the screening of the animated movie "Kung Fu Panda 4." Though Jose Almeida is associated with local Atzmus Martial Arts studio, the first movie he chose to show was strictly coincidental. "It just happened; it just lined up that way," he said in a phone interview. "We were talking to the (film) booker about the different movies available, and this one was not too old, not...

  • Mark Memorial Day for great Americans

    Leonard Lauriault, Religion columnist|May 22, 2024

It occurred to me that this year, Memorial Day will fall about halfway between Mother’s Day, which I wrote about in my last article, and Father’s Day, which I’ll write about in a future article. All three holidays were established to remember specific people. While it’s easy to recognize who we remember on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, the focus of Memorial Day has changed over the years — from concentrating on those who gave their lives in military service to America to all Americans who’ve passed on as indicated by the decorating of m...

Nixon’s lawyer also refused a request to turn over 66 tapes related to contributions from International Telephone and Telegraph and milk producers. Nixon, embroiled by the Watergate scandal, later would resign from office in August. — Patricia Hearst told a hostage she joined the Symbionese Liberation Army becau...

  • San Jon picks architect for new school

Superintendent Alan Umholtz said a district committee looked at 11 architectural firms that expressed interest in designing San Jon’s new school. He said he was “amazed” at how many firms showed up at the initial meeting about the project, though two declined to submit packets to the committee. He said the committee whittled the list to four. Those applicants were interviewed a day before the mee...

  • Biden v. Trump debates have right balance

New York Daily News, Syndicated content|May 22, 2024

The last time the Democrats and the Republicans held a White House rematch with the same two contenders was 1956, when Ike beat Adlai Stevenson for the second straight time. Earlier, there were redos with William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan (McKinley won both in 1896 and 1900) and Grover Cleveland vs. Benjamin Harrison (in 1888, Harrison defeated the incumbent Cleveland, who then staged a comeback victory in 1892). In the pre-Civil War days, before the GOP existed, when there were Whigs and such, Martin Van Buren beat William Henry...

  • Lack of climate mitigation could seal fate

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|May 22, 2024

If you ask me, history is speeding up. Used to be, things didn’t change much from one generation to another, but with the onset of the 20th century, it all began to accelerate. And, now that we’re a couple of decades into the 21st century, we’re living as if the past doesn’t matter anymore. But of course, it does. History is how we got here, and it portends where we’re going. My baby-boomer generation has been through some incredible history. We were raised during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and ’60s, which led our nation in a...

  • Trump only person who can save US from Biden

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|May 22, 2024

What’s happening on CNN and MSNBC is disgusting, but not surprising. Some of their so-called pundits and reporters have been downright giddy while watching Donald Trump on trial in New York City. They think the New York DA’s office is doing God’s work, not Joe Biden’s. They love watching lying lowlifes like porn star Stormy Daniels and Trump’s former fixer Michael Cohen testifying against the ex-president. It doesn’t matter to losers like Joe & Mika and Jen Psaki that the Democrats are using the Justice Department as a weapon to interfere w...

  • No more miracles for Longhorns

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|May 22, 2024

ALBUQUERQUE - The Logan baseball team wasn't going to pull off a second miracle in as many days. Dathan Yeary and his Melrose teammates made sure of that. Like he did last year, Yeary frustrated the hitters of top-seeded Logan in a complete-game 9-1 victory Friday in the Class 1A baseball championship at Santa Ana Star Field at the University of New Mexico. The Buffaloes (14-6), seeded third, captured their second state title in a row. Melrose vanquished previously unbeaten Logan in the 1A...

  • Mesilla Valley ousts Lady Longhorns from state tourney

    Staff report|May 22, 2024

The Logan softball team’s first postseason trip in six years was short in duration, with an 18-8 first-round loss to eventual state runner-up Mesilla Valley Christian on Wednesday. The Lady Longhorns lost despite the heroics of Marilyn Moreno, who went 3-for-3 with a triple and two home runs. She drove in four runs. “Marilyn is a phenomenal player,” Logan coach Dustin Robertson said. “She’s first-team all-state in my opinion, and no one will convince me otherwise.” Also for Logan, Jadyn Garcia hit a three-run triple and scored two runs. Presl...
