  • Ex-MCC president's suit dismissed

    Staff report|May 18, 2022

A whistleblower and retaliation lawsuit filed by the former president of Mesalands Community College after he was fired two years ago was dismissed after both parties filed a motion to do so. Ninth Judicial District Judge David Reeb of Clovis on May 5 granted a joint motion to dismiss John Groesbeck’s lawsuit with prejudice, which means the suit cannot be refiled at a later date. The New Mexico Supreme Court appointed Reeb to the case after 10th Judicial District Judge Albert Mitchell Jr. of Tucumcari recused himself. Andrea Mora, a legal a...

  • City OKs lodgers tax funding

    Ron Warnick|May 18, 2022

The Tucumcari City Commission vote 4-1 to approve most Lodgers Tax Advisory Board funding recommendations for festivals and tourism entities, except it stripped $25,000 from Rockin’ Route 66 and reallocated it. Commissioner Ralph Moya, irked by Rockin’ Route 66’s virtual concert in Georgia in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, insisted on removing the $25,000 recommended by City Manager Mark Martinez and moving the funds to miscellaneous funding. (The lodgers tax board had recommended only $20,000 for Rockin’ Route 66.) Those miscellaneous fund...

  • San Jon board members want new bleachers for old gym

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|May 18, 2022

SAN JON — San Jon Municipal Schools board members went over a wish list of items for its fiscal year 2023 budget, and several added one — new bleachers for the old gymnasium. Jeremy Wade Allen, upon hearing the list from superintendent Janet Gladu during a budget work session Wednesday, advocated for the new bleachers in the old gym. The newer gymnasium is out of commission indefinitely while Gladu is trying to settle with its insurer over storm damage that occurred in the spring. Fellow board member Brian Watson agreed with Allen’s idea,...

  • Acts 5: Tactics of tyranny defeated

    Gordon Runyan, Religion columnist|May 18, 2022

In Acts chapter 5, we have the second confrontation between the church and the centralized government of the day, the Sanhedrin council. The first clash came (in chapter 3) in the wake of a miraculous healing, which set the whole temple campus buzzing. Now, here we are again, with the leaders of the upstart religion multiplying the miracles, and disobeying the authorities by persistently preaching Jesus. The rulers were jealous of the crowds. As we read through chapter 5, and digest the story of the arrest of the preachers, followed by their...

  • 44 participate in virtual MCC commencement

    Staff report|May 18, 2022

A total of 44 students took part Friday in a virtual commencement ceremony at Mesalands Community College. It was the third straight year Mesalands held its spring graduation ceremony virtually. The 2020 and 2021 events were done online because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and this year’s was performed virtually because the college was unable to secure a suitable location for the event. The college has pledged to hold a celebration next year for 2022 graduates that would include commencement, awards celebrations and a golf tournament. The 3...

  • Arch Hurley again allocates no irrigation water

    Staff report|May 18, 2022

To little surprise, the Arch Hurley Conservancy District’s board of directors voted last week to not allocate any Conchas Lake water to its canal system at this time. The parched region has seen almost no rain since the district board last met in April. District manager Franklin McCasland stated in his monthly report the lake’s elevation had dropped nearly a foot, to 4,159.7 feet, just before the board’s meeting May 10. Arch Hurley typically does not discharge water until the lake’s level rises to 4,174 feet. McCasland reported Conchas Lake re...

On this date ... 1972: Lee Francis, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, attended a Dutch-treat dinner in his honor at the Pow Wow Restaurant in Tucumcari. Francis, citing big losses during the 1970 election, said the only way Republicans can be elected in New Mexico is unity in the party and convincing independent voters to cast their ballots for GOP candidates. • D.H. Williams, New Mexico State University agronomist, said water in Conchas Lake and the Canadian River were running low and that farmers in the Tucumcari irrigation project w...

  • Need to take steps to limit future pandemic deaths

    Las Vegas Sun, Syndicated content|May 18, 2022

We have reached a grim milestone in U.S. history. One million people in the United States have now died as either a direct result of, or complications due to, the COVID-19 virus. Disputes rage over almost every circumstance surrounding the virus and our (mis)management of it. Even the number of deaths is hotly debated based on whether certain circumstances surrounding a death should be officially classified as COVID or not. Yet the fact remains that a million people lost their lives sooner than they likely would have if they had not been...

  • Disinformation board is Orwellian

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|May 18, 2022

The federal government’s hastily thrown together Disinformation Governance Board was a predictable reaction to the “threat” this government sees in freer speech on social media. Of course, free speech is not a threat to anyone who doesn’t depend on censorship and lies, without opposition, to fool the public. Widespread ridicule for the idea was immediate, with many people labeling this new bureaucracy Biden’s Ministry of Truth, after the ironically named propaganda agency from George Orwell’s book “1984.” The Disinformation Governance Board is,...

  • Minor's decision has major consequences

    Tina Dziuk, Guest columnist|May 18, 2022

I am pro-life. I am a woman of faith, but I have a story to tell. When I was 16, I became pregnant. It was the summer of 1987. My then boyfriend, Tom, had just graduated high school. Neither one of us thought we were ready to be parents. The thought of telling my mother seemed out of the question. My mom was an amazing woman who would have supported me no matter what, but, in my heart, I didn’t want to disappoint her. Neither Tom nor I spoke to our families before we decided on an abortion. I remember waiting anxiously to leave the morning o...

The Lady Rattlers (14-12) later that day were eliminated from the tournament with successive losses to top-seeded Robertson and Raton. In the playoff opener, ninth-seeded Tucumcari bolted to an 8-1 lead over eighth-seed Zuni (15-8) after four innings. “I knew we would be well-matched with them, and the girls were ready,” Tucumcari coach...

Rematch, and repeat. Logan's second-seeded baseball team on Saturday faced top-seed Gateway Christian for the second straight year in the Class 1A championship game at Santa Ana Star Field in Albuquerque. Again, the Longhorns came away with the victory - this time, an 11-4 decision where they rallied for six runs in the final inning to leave little doubt of the outcome. Logan third baseman Skyler DeLuca caught a pop fly in foul territory for the final out, prompting several teammates to throw th...

Young said he announced his imminent retirement to his track and field athletes about two weeks before the season ended. "I gathered them all together, and they probably thought they were in trouble," he said, chuckling. "I think some of them were surprised. It got pretty emotional." He informed...
