    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Apr 6, 2022

The city's Lodgers Tax Advisory Board heard a funding proposal from Rotary Club of Tucumcari to refurbish the big "T" on Tucumcari Mountain so it's brighter at night and stands out more during the day. Robert Hockaday and his son, Bobby, made a formal presentation about the "T" project during a board work session that also considered presentations from events and entities requesting financial assistance of motel tax funds during the 2023 fiscal year. The Rotary Club in late 2020 relighted the "T...

  • Green day: Cannabis sales begin with a few hiccups

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Apr 6, 2022

The era of legal recreational marijuana began Friday morning in Tucumcari, but not without a few hiccups due to supply shortages and one business' computer-system issues. Only one of an estimated eight retail cannabis businesses that are set up in Tucumcari opened Friday morning for New Mexico's first day of legal recreational cannabis sales. And the one business that opened on Friday, Buds n' More on South First Street near the Interstate 40 exit, didn't conduct hardly any cannabis sales due...

  • Options to renovate, replace Trigg explained

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|Apr 6, 2022

An engineer explained to county commissioners three options on dealing with an aging Dr. Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital in Tucumcari - building a new facility, renovating it or using a hybrid of the two. Either way, it's going to cost at least $19 million and likely more. Mike Williams, a healthcare planner and principal at Stantec Architecture in Phoenix, talked by videoconference about those options from a feasibility study for the hospital during a Quay County Commission meeting Thursday....

The lone Democratic candidate for Quay County sheriff withdrew from the primary election race last week. Reyes Gonzales, a Tucumcari police officer who made a previous unsuccessful run for sheriff on the Democratic ticket in 2018, filed paperwork on March 28 to officially withdraw from the race, Quay County Clerk Ellen White said. White said Gonzales did not give his reason for withdrawing. An email and text to him requesting comment were not answered. Gonzales’ withdrawal leaves the Democratic Party with no candidate for that office for the J...

On this date ... 1972: Fourteen striking workers at the Tucumcari Power Plant went back to work following a two-day walkout after the Power Board and city commissioners heard their complaints. Several workers complained the plant’s new superintendent had split work shifts and that workers began painting the plant when they should have been doing maintenance on engines to prepare for the coming summer months. The superintendent denied reports he would lay off the plant’s older workers but admitted he was training younger employees so they cou...

  • Trust puts skin in the game

    Gordon Runyan, Religion columnist|Apr 6, 2022

In Christian circles, we have a tendency to develop “jargon,” a technical short-hand way of speaking. We use words, and we just assume everybody knows what we mean. They don’t, however, and the irony is that we ourselves forget. The jargon substitutes for actually thinking about what we’re saying. We do this with words like “faith,” “saved,” “born again” and “holiness.” A friend suggested that we’ve done this with the word, “trust.” What’s the word actually mean? We throw it around a lot. Do you trust in God? Trust Jesus! Trust the promises...

  • Political figures don't deserve public harassment

    Las Vegas Sun, Syndicated content|Apr 6, 2022

Just weeks after two right-wing extremists verbally assaulted and appeared to threaten violence against Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak and his wife at a restaurant in Las Vegas, a left-wing radical unleashed a vile tirade against Republican gubernatorial candidate Joe Lombardo during a public appearance late last month. In both cases the tactics were similar — the public figure is asked to come in close to the assailant under the pretext of taking a selfie and then, once within easy reach of the assailant — and potentially vulnerable to vio...

  • Texas marijuana laws are failure

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Apr 6, 2022

An excellent measure of whether a “law” is good or bad is to see if it prohibits something that isn’t prohibited elsewhere -- especially, right next door. If something is clearly bad enough for there to be unanimous agreement it should be prohibited, I might give the argument in favor of prohibition some thought. Otherwise, the law is trash, unworthy of a moment’s consideration or my support. By this measure, Texas’ marijuana laws fail. Hard. The Eastern New Mexico News reported last week that Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Johnny Bures...

And if you’re like me and enjoy the “hidden treasures” of our state, here’s one you might enjoy: Mills Canyon in Harding County. It’s tucked away in the grasslands of northeastern New Mexico, in the most sparsely populated county in the state. The park is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and includes one of the most rugged stretches of the Canadian River in northeastern New Mexico. It’s within the Kiowa National Grasslands, where the Canadian River...

Tucumcari first-year coach George Montano — the third Rattlers coach since the skid began — acknowledged the victory produced “a lot of emotions from the coaches and the boys.” “The game should have ended soon than it did,” he added. “We need to learn...
