  • All types welcome to attend church services

    Mar 27, 2012

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven" —Ecclesiastes 3:1 Winter is over and the Spring season is finally here although some days felt more like Summer. With the coming of Spring is also the Easter season. It is a special time for Christians as they observe the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ who is alive. For some people, this is the one time of year to go to church because it is what their parents and grandparents did in between the Easter egg hunt and the huge family dinner that f...

  • Questions linger after Florida teen's shooting

    Mar 27, 2012

If you turn on a news channel you're sure to see a story on the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. I will admit, Martin's death and the circumstances surrounding it are very suspicious. In case you only read the Quay County Sun (and thank you for doing so), the 17-year-old Martin was fatally shot Feb. 26 by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer patrolling the neighborhood Martin was visiting with his father when the shooting occurred. To date, there have been no arrests or charges filed. It's still a shock to me that Martin was shot...

  • Manning good fit for Broncos

    Mar 27, 2012

Peyton Manning remade in orange. That's something I can live with. In the last few months I've written a couple of columns about the circus that was Tim Tebow in Denver. So I decided before I started crowing about Manning signing with my favorite team the Broncos, I had better examine just how far onto Tebow's circus bandwagon I had climbed. For those of you who can't remember or didn't read those columns I'm happy to report both doses praised Tebow for his personal life and his leadership but still expressed more than a little skepticism...

  • Letter to the editor  - March 28

    Mar 27, 2012

"But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man." — Jesus of Nazareth Children exposed to obscene speech I am tired of the obscene vocabulary my fellow Tucumcarians tolerate in our community. As I write this letter, two of my neighbors sit on their front porches, expressing themselves in front of their children with a full range of choice metaphors. Not to single out any particular person, my ears can listen on almost any day and hear a stream of filthy speech from about any direction. A few years a...

  • Videos remind me of Aggie days

    Mar 27, 2012

Most of you are well aware that I am a proud New Mexico State University Aggie and am particularly proud to have received my first degree from then New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. While I was still in the English Department, I became involved in a project that was to recognize our centennial. Many of the outstanding individuals of the area were interviewed, and all proceedings were taped so the program could be put together in the form of VCR tapes and shown on our PBS station. I was fortunate enough to receive a set of...
