  • Letter to the editor: Obamacare only bad for special interests

    Mar 26, 2013

The constant pitch you hear from conservative publications, talk shows and columnists: Obamacare is bad. The reason: There is a well funded and organized group that benefits billions from the status quo. The various "think tanks" were set up for the purpose of promoting their ideology that maintains their flow of wealth and power. Facts are ignored or manipulated. The starting date for the main parts of the Affordable Care Act take effect Jan. 1, but several things have already occurred that the "liberal" media overlooked. The part that lets...

  • Thomas: Proud to call Nara Visa home

    Mar 26, 2013

I was reminded Monday about how nice it is to go back home, and see the people of the community interested in current events. The Quay County Commission had their regular meeting in the gym kitchen of the community center at Nara Visa. Now, some of you may be scratching your head and wondering just where on earth Nara Visa is. I assure you that it is a township in the state of New Mexico, though it happens to be the one, if not the only, town to operate on central time. Nara Visa, like many other towns in the southwest, had a booming...

  • Notes from the church lady: Gift came at time I needed it

    Mar 26, 2013

"Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre... Luke 24:1" It was so dark I could hardly see when I climbed into the pickup early that morning. How I longed for the warmth of my bed and a little more sleep. As we drove east I slowly was able to make out shapes that became clearer as we traveled. These shapes took on an almost eerie monochromatic look void of all color and it was difficult to determine what they were. As the sky brightened, colors replaced the monochrome. The sun suddenly popped ov...

  • Comments from the canyons: Respecting privacy should be automatic

    Mar 26, 2013

Those of us who have spent much of our lives in rural areas are accustomed to having our privacy and can become a little upset when it is violated — especially if we are unaware that someone else is listening to our personal conversations. In our early lives, we could rest assured that whatever we said to a friend in our home or in the friend's home would not be overheard by anyone else unless we invited other listeners into our area. When we had party lines instead of straight telephone lines, we knew to be careful about what we were saying b...

  • Christ-followers need to be cross-bearers, not consumers

    Curtis K Shelburne Religion columnist|Mar 26, 2013

We stand this moment on a holy threshold, waiting to enter into the joy of the resurrection. Easter is almost here! Almost, but not quite. I understand the dangerous and common temptation to leap-frog over Good Friday's pain and suffering, but before we enter into the joy of the resurrection, we need to focus on the cross and ask ourselves some probing questions. That's no new idea, of course. It's funny how often the modern church discovers some wheel that was invented centuries ago. (I suppose learning about wheels late is better than not...
