  • Iron pour draws folk from all over

    Thomas Garcia QCS Senior Writer|Mar 19, 2013

Mesalands Community College's annual iron pour was a success thanks to the dedication and experience of those who return each year, officials said. QCS photo: Jerrene Bradley Students pour hot iron into molds that they made. More than four dozen took part in the week-long event, which culminated Friday with the melting and pouring of the iron. • TSA finally coming to its senses

    Mar 19, 2013

You're getting ready to board a plane at an airport in, say, Lubbock or Amarillo. An agent asks you to empty your pockets into a plastic tray. The contents include a pocket knife you've been carrying since Grandpa gave it to you when you were a youngster. Hey, no problem, the agent says. You can carry the knife onto the plane. New rules will soon allow it and if you were carrying a set of golf clubs for your vacation, you can carry those with you, too. Beginning on April 25, this scenario will be played out in air terminals around the country u...

  • Paradox a full gift for one and all

    Curtis K Shelburne Religion columnist|Mar 19, 2013

The greatest gift ever given to me, the most intimate and personal gift I've ever received, was the gift given to everyone, not just me. That greatest gift was given to everyone who has ever breathed, to multitudes who no longer breathe, and to untold millions who've yet to take their first breath. It was a gift about me, suited perfectly for me, a gift handcrafted precisely to fit my need, a gift I've been told that the Giver would have given if I'd been the only one in need. • Comments from the canyons: Historical photos make for mental exercise

    Mar 19, 2013

Many of us are interested in our area history and are eager to learn more when we can. Linda Moore, who keeps the doors open at Tucumcari Historical Museum, keeps some of us searching for answers to questions she dreams up as she goes about her work there. Of late, she has been trying to identify people and buildings in old pictures she finnds. When she calls me, I know she has something for me to think about. Her cheerful voice alerts me to the need to do some kind of research. Sometimes, I can help her and sometimes, I can't, but I have fun...

  • Lauriault: Christian unity should be less like rickety ladder

    Mar 19, 2013

This story is embellished somewhat, but it could be true, or it could just be a big whopper. I have a friend with a lighted barn that has a lofty ceiling. Whenever a light bulb burns out, he would fire up his telescopic forklift and go to the ceiling to change the bulb. Then, almost simultaneously, his forklift broke down and multiple bulbs blew. He couldn't see to fix his forklift and he couldn't get his light bulbs changed. So, he gathered up all his ladders and pieces thereof and bolted, wired, and welded them together to form something...
