  • Conchas Lodge to be torn down

    the Staff of The News|Dec 18, 2024

The historic but long-closed Conchas Lodge at Conchas Lake State Park northwest of Tucumcari eventually will be torn down due to its dilapidated state and hazardous materials in the structure. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held a virtual public hearing Wednesday to discuss the lodge's future. The corps several years ago had considered at least a partial renovation of the site, but they determined in recent months that it was not economically feasible. Conchas Lodge contains asbestos and lead...

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Dec 18, 2024

The city has spent a lot of time and money improving the Tucumcari Recreation Center this year, and it decided last week to show it off the the public. The city hosted an open house on Dec. 9 at the revamped facility - a former New Mexico National Guard armory - at 900 E. Laughlin Ave. The city received a $2 million state recreation grant earlier this year and spent over half that renovating the building, city manager Paula Chacon said. Funds also were used to renovate the Little League fields....

  • State will audit MCC through FY2025

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Dec 18, 2024

The president for Mesalands Community College said the New Mexico Office of the State Auditor would continue to perform audits for the financially distressed college through at least the 2025 fiscal year. President Allen Moss told the board of trustees during its Dec. 10 meeting he talked with State Auditor James Maestas about future audits. Moss said state-performed audits on the college would be more expensive than an independent auditor, but such reports would have more consistency. State auditors have performed the college’s audits for fisc...

  • District may allocate water as soon as January

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Dec 18, 2024

The manager of the Arch Hurley Conservancy District last week said he would consider a tentative water allocation in January because of the highest levels at Conchas Lake in years. Robert Evans attended the Dec. 10 board of directors meeting and asked whether it could allocate water that month so he and other farmers could make plans for the spring growing season. Larry Perkins, serving as chairman for the absent Robert Lopez, said the board probably would allocate water in February. District manager Franklin McCasland said the board might...

  • Frustration with our healthcare justified; killing CEOs is not

    Boston Herald, Syndicated content|Dec 18, 2024

Luigi Mangione, the accused killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is being hailed by many as a hero. There’s something profoundly wrong with that. From the time of Thompson’s murder on a Manhattan street caught in surveillance camera photos, to snippets of Mangione’s alleged movements while on the run, online praise for Mangione has run neck and neck with vitriol for health insurers. Google removed a flood of negative McDonald’s reviews after a fast-food employee in an Altoona, Pa., location reported Mangione to police and he was arr...

  • Our individuality adds flavor to lives

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Dec 18, 2024

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I grew up on them. They were the first thing I learned to make in the kitchen. That and a glass of milk. Microwaves hadn’t been invented yet. Playing basketball on a dirt patch in our back yard. That’s where I learned to dribble and shoot with one hand. And football in our front yard. When no one else was around, I’d take the hike from an imaginary center, drop back and throw to the trees, believing that I was the star quarterback in a universe I could only imagine. Those were simpler times, when telev...

  • Biggest stories reported very differently

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Dec 18, 2024

The biggest stories in the national media of late both came from the mad streets of New York. The manslaughter trial of Daniel Penny, the young man who accidentally killed a crazed homeless man on the subway, and the cold-blooded assassination of a healthcare CEO on the sidewalks of Manhattan both deserved the saturation coverage and commentary they received. But the way in which the stories were spun by the left-liberal news media shows what a sick, upside-down mentality exists in the U.S. In the case of Penny, it’s safe to say Fox News and c...

  • Logan's big guys dominate Rattlers

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Dec 18, 2024

Simply put, Tucumcari didn't have an answer for Logan's big guys. The Longhorns' big men of 6-foot-7 Hayden Bruhn and 6-foot-5 Mason Wallin combined for 39 points and a truckload of rebounds during a 73-44 victory Saturday in the annual Quay County bragging rights battle at Rattler Gymnasium. Wallin scored many of his game-high 22 points after offensive rebounds. In addition to being another big presence inside, Bruhn made two 3-point shots and slammed home a dunk during a fastbreak during the...

  • Foul shots help lift THS girls past Logan

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Dec 18, 2024

For the second time in less than a week, Tucumcari senior Caylee Benavidez's free-throw shooting helped preserve a victory - this time, a 42-39 nail-biter over Quay County rival Logan on Saturday at Rattler Gymnasium. With the Lady Rattlers clinging to a 40-39 lead, Benavidez made both foul-shot attempts with 10.8 seconds left to give her team more of a cushion. In the final seconds, the Lady Longhorns attempted two shots - including what would have been a game-tying 3-pointer - but both...

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Dec 18, 2024

SAN JON — San Jon High School won’t host basketball games at the Ed Lee Activities Complex for a few more weeks because of problems with its gym floor — again. Athletic director Bobby Kandel told the school board during its Dec. 9 meeting that cupping in one corner of the floor worsened after heavy rains hit the region starting in late October. It is believed that water intruded underneath the floor in that area. Kandel said that same corner of the gym has experienced problems before. The affected area involves about 500 square feet. • Where no man has gone before, Part 2

    Leonard Lauriault, Religion columnist|Dec 18, 2024

My Dec. 4 column in the Quay County Sun was about how the original “Star Trek” star, William Shatner, had actually gone into “the final frontier” and wrote a Variety magazine article about it. The original idea for my article was the concept of going where no man had gone before, but it didn’t go where I thought it would and became largely based on Shatner’s article. Today’s column will continue my thoughts from the Variety article and conclude with my original concept about Christmas. Space disappointed Shatner because it wasn’t as glo...
