    Feb 28, 2018

We must arm our teachers. We’ll have to train them, of course. And they’ll need to be paid extra ... ... is the dumbest idea yet for making our schools safer. There are no easy answers for preventing more Columbines, Sandy Hooks, Parklands, etc. But we can help focus this conversation on more realistic solutions by eliminating the most ridiculous ideas that seem to have traction. Yes, we live in a fast-paced world that requires multi-tasking, doing more with less and spending hard-earned dollars responsibly. But the concept of teachers dou...

  • Guns in schools recipe for trouble

    Steve Hansen, Correspondent|Feb 28, 2018

TUCUMCARI — To make schools safer, we should consider locking doors, installing security cameras, tightening procedures and protocols, planning and drilling for active shooters, and maybe even hiring armed security guards. Please, do not arm teachers. • Ideas have consequences for life

    Gordan Runyan, Religion columnist|Feb 28, 2018

After past tragedies, I’ve written here about a biblical view of suffering; the basic human right to self-defense; and, the foolishness of treating government like a god. Here we are again, though, after the horror in Florida, with a child killing children at school. American society responds with a volley of partisan talking points. The best ideas are only of the band-aid sort, to plug holes in existing laws. If we can just tweek the wording of the civil codes, and get it perfect, no one w...
