Ute water plans make no sense What Clovis is doing to Logan and Ute Lake, not to mention Quay County, is a crime. It has decided the water we all enjoy belongs to others and is out to get it, no matter the cost to Logan. Curry County let all the dairies come in. How many gallons of water does each dairy use? How many pivots are in use to support the feed needed for all the cows? And now Clovis wants the water Quay County residents use for recreation and making a living around Ute Lake. There is money being made in Clovis and Portales, but what...

  • Advance action helps area weather blizzard

    Thomas Garcia QCS Senior Writer|Feb 26, 2013

Advance action by police and other emergency agencies and citizens heeding numerous warnings to stay off the roads helped many weather the worst blizzard in a decade, officials said. QCS Photo: Thomas Garcia Residents drive down slushy and icy roads on South First Street Monday morning after a strong winter storm dropped eight inches of snow on Tucumcari. Officials credit the early closure of Interstate 40 for a low amount of accidents in Sunday's blizzard, which pummeled the region with 60 mph winds and dumped eight inches of snow on... Full story

  • Where does the white goes when the snow melts?

    Curtis K Shelburne Religion columnist|Feb 26, 2013

Ah, we're snowed in today, and I love it! I am a snow man, no doubt about it. Not the abominable kind, I hope. Just the very ordinary kind. ("Snow person" might have been clearer, but that would be dangerously close to the politically correct ravaging and neutering of the English language evidenced by such atrocities as "chairperson," a term that should be relegated to bad science fiction movies.) I just love snow. Whoever said that "there is nothing in all of nature more beautiful than snow" was right. I never get enough of it. Of course, we... Full story

  • Comments from the canyons: With age goes fleeting memory

    Feb 26, 2013

Although I don't read nearly as much as I used to, I still like to leaf through books to try to find a few words that express thoughts and feelings. Of course, poetry is a major source of those thoughts and feelings, and I really enjoy browsing through those carefully tailored words that say so much without being wordy. Thomas Bailey Aldrich, an American writer (1836-1907) when writing about memory, penned, "My mind lets go a thousand things, like dates of wars and deaths of kings." Those of us in the "over-the-hill-gang" can certainly apprecia... Full story

  • Notes from the church lady: Despite man's efforts, God in control

    Feb 26, 2013

"To every thing there is ... a time to every purpose under the heaven." — Ecclesiastes 3:3 One of the weaknesses of man is his desire to be in control of everything. It is disconcerting when variables come into play making the outcome uncertain. Some men think they are smart enough to control their environment. Electric lights are man's attempt to dispel darkness. This is only true if one has enough batteries, a cord long enough, or a power source nearby. Man thinks he has altered his environment through heaters or air conditioners. Comfort i... Full story
