Government legislation seldom accomplishes its stated intention. But one bill approved by New Mexico lawmakers this week is certain to make things better for us all — because it relaxes government oversight. Senate Bill 56, sponsored by Sen. Stuart Ingle, R-Portales, and signed by Gov. Susana Martinez, lifts restrictions on hay hauling. Before Tuesday, oversized loads of hay could only be transported on national highways. SB 56 allows permitted vehicles to haul hay on state roads as well. It took drought conditions to spur the relaxed...

It's hard to keep up with old friends and former coworkers. They promised me email, Facebook and cell phones would change all that. Eventually we find out that people change email addresses for one reason or another and Facebook is great for reconnecting but not very personal. Cell phones, well they don't keep us any better connected than the old phone on the wall. In the last week, two of those old friends and coworkers met their final deadline. One died suddenly and unexpectedly, the other suffered through a protracted bout with cancer. Both...

Harden previously served in Johnson’s administration as secretary of the state Departmen...

QCS senior writer A last-second turnover by the Santa Rosa Lions clinched a 45-42 win for the Tucumcari Rattlers Tuesday night at the Snake Pit. With less than 10 seconds left in the District 4-2A tournament boys game, Lions forward Jason Sanchez saw Robert Zamora alone at the 3-point line. Zamora had hit two-three pointers in the final period and was positioned to tie the game. Rushing to beat the clock, Sanchez overthrew Zamora. “The turnovers hurt us,” said Lions head coach Joseph Esquibel. Esquibel said good ball control comes down to exp... Full story
