  • Officials want more pay for city workers

    Ron Warnick, QCS Senior Writer|May 11, 2022

Tucumcari city commissioners came to a consensus last week that any money available in the forthcoming budget should boost salaries for city workers. Infrastructure and equipment needs also ranked high on the priority list. During a commission work session Thursday, Finance Director Rachelle Arias quizzed commissioners and City Manager Mark Martinez about priorities for fiscal year 2023, which begins June 1. The city is required to submit an interim budget to the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration by May 31. Martinez said...

  • GOP race likely decides who becomes sheriff

    Staff report|May 11, 2022

The two GOP candidates, current 43-year-old undersheriff Dennis Garcia and recently retired 48-year-old Tucumcari Police officer Herman Martinez. One of them will succeed current Sheriff Russell Shafer, who is term-limited. Early voting in Quay County began Tuesday; the primary election is set for June 7. The filing date for independent or...

  • Remembrances – Mother's Day

    Leonard Lauriault, Religion columnist|May 11, 2022

This past Sunday was Mother’s Day. That should’ve been no surprise to anyone who watches TV or looks at the ads that come by email and snail mail, including the inserts in your Quay County Sun. As a matter of fact, while there’s been a celebration of motherhood for millennia throughout the world on various dates, Americans have known for over a 100 years the second Sunday in May is our Mother’s Day holiday. This year, Mother’s Day came on its earliest possible date. In 2023, it’ll come on its latest possible date, May 14. The holiday bou...

  • Court's leaked draft still just that - a draft

    Orange County Register, Syndicated content|May 11, 2022

The leak of a draft United States Supreme Court ruling written by Justice Samuel Alito in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which would overturn past court precedents in favor of leaving abortion laws to the states, has ignited intense political debate over the future of abortion laws and the institution of the Supreme Court itself. This is a polarizing issue — including among our own editorial board — and we anticipate a lot of understandably heated rhetoric from activists, partisans and politicians on each side of this issue. But...

  • Neither side correct on court leak

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|May 11, 2022

The recent Supreme Court leak is all over the media. People on both sides feel compelled to speak out loudly and passionately for whichever side they support. There is no debate; just a fight. For days it was as though hyperbole had become America’s official language. I even allowed myself to be drawn in. Getting involved didn’t improve my life in any way. Engaging with this subject makes me miserable, like sticking a nine-volt battery to my tongue (please don’t do that!). This is the one topic, which everyone is talking about, where I don’t...

  • Graduates: Be bold, but be safe

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|May 11, 2022

It’s that time of year, when just about every newspaper in the state gives front-page attention to at least one local graduation. They’re always a big deal, especially to those who walk across that ceremonial stage and make their families proud. Graduations mark a transition in our lives, but sometimes I think it’s over-emphasized. Anyone who thinks a diploma or degree is a ticket to success is sadly mistaken. It’s just a ticket to ride; you still have to get there on your own. But rather than continuing with a recitation of grad-day platitudes...

    Staff report|May 11, 2022

The Logan softball team earned its first victory of 2022 with a resounding 17-6 win last week over Clayton in the season finale. It appeared the Lady Longhorns, who are rebuilding their program after a two-year hiatus, might go winless after losing their first 20 games of the year and falling 15-11 in the first game of their season-ending doubleheader against the Yellowjackets on May 3. Instead, Logan notched a relatively easy win in the nightcap. “The girls were very, very excited with the win,” Logan coach Dustin Robertson said. “I’m proud o...
