The council declined to comment on the reason for Thompson’s removal, citing limited p...

  • Legislature put in good work this session

    Albuquerque Journal|Feb 21, 2018

The legislative session is over, and if there’s one thing it showcased it’s that our citizen Legislature can set aside political differences and come together to do what’s best for constituents. The work lawmakers did over those 30 days will make a real difference in the lives of everyday New Mexicans, including approving a measure that will make it easier to establish crisis-triage centers throughout the state. Analysts say those crisis centers could decrease drug overdoses, alcohol-related deaths and even suicides. Of course, most of the l...

There were 17 victims and six heroes, three of whom were also victims, in last week’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland, Florida. Theirs are the names we should know, so I’m going to repeat them. All but three were teenagers who will never see the adulthood they were approaching. Victims who were also heroes, from the New York Times, CNN and Fox News: Peter Wang,15, was last seen in his Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps uniform, holding a door open so others could escape the gunfire. Herrera, who made seven 3-pointers, said Clayton (15-9, 3-3) is a...

  • Getting on the right page

    Leonard Lauriault, Religion columnist|Feb 21, 2018

Recently, while song-leading at church, I called out the number and title for, “Oh to be like thee.” Then, as occasionally happens, I fumbled with the pages in the hymnal while everyone else was waiting for me to get on the right page. So, I stated, “I’m having trouble getting there.” It immediately dawned on me what I had said, “Oh to be like thee, I’m having trouble getting there.” If that’s what I had meant, it would’ve been an honest confession (Romans 7:14-25). Christians are to continue putting away the fruitless deeds of darkness t...
