  • Cultivate relationships with other Christians

    Feb 8, 2012

I did the household gardening when I was in high school. Each year I planted a lettuce bed in late winter that also included green onions. Some people would put different kinds of leafy greens in their lettuce bed so they could experience the different flavors in their salad. Our Christian life is like that salad, having many different aspects all in the same bowl and Hebrews 10:19-25 is like some lettuce beds because it includes several statements that begin with ‘let us,’ meaning “we should.” The first ‘let us’ describes the very basis of our...

  • Ads make Super Bowl interesting

    Feb 8, 2012

It's pretty funny how Americans decided we didn't have enough major holidays on the calendar so we turned a sporting event into one. I guess the commercialization of the Super Bowl is a lot better thing than the way we commercialize Christmas. But the price of those commercials – wow! I think I heard that a 30-second television spot is going for $3.5 million. Most any mom and pop Main Street business in America would be proud to have $3.5 million in sales every year so the thought of that amount for a 30-second commercial only elevates our f...

  • Obama plan would prolong housing pain

    Feb 8, 2012

It was predictable that President Barack Obama would pander again to entitlement sentiments. This time involves the misguided belief that everyone is entitled to homeownership, even at the government's — the taxpayers' — expense. But the president's audacity is a bit much to take, even for an election year. Obama wants to effectively bail out borrowers who owe more than their homes are worth by having taxpayers assume the risk of borrowers defaulting. This is the same president who this week promised to end bailouts, even as he touted the sup...

  • Super Bowl ads not so 'super'

    Feb 8, 2012

Well, the Super Bowl is over and professional football has left us once again until September. The Super Bowl is the pinnacle of achievements for the 32 teams in the National Football League. Its history is rich, its atmosphere is electric, and its finishes are often ones for the history books. I am a fan of the game, its meaning and significance in crowing the best team of the NFL for the season. I want to congratulate the New York Giants on their win and keeping the Lombardi Trophy in the National Football Conference. And to the New England...

Senior Isabel Herrera said the old layout was plain and had no life or feeling. She said the staff wanted to make the yearbook something special. “Our first thoughts were, ‘Nobody likes change,’” Herrera said. “If we messed this up (yearbook) we would never live it down.” Her...
