    David Stevens, Editor|Jan 31, 2018

CLOVIS - Lonnie Allsup first became interested in retail grocery sales when he was 10 years old in his hometown of Morton, Texas. "He used to stand on a box to stock and bag. Allsup liked the fast part of the grocery store business and taking care of the customer," reads the Eastern New Mexico High Plains History book published in 1979. The passion continued for the rest of his life, his name linked to hundreds of Allsup's convenience stores across Texas and New Mexico. Allsup died Sunday at his...

A mediation hearing is scheduled for Friday in Albuquerque federal district court in a civil case against Tucumcari city and police officials filed by owners of the Payless Inn, which was destroyed in an arson fire in 2014 started by former Tucumcari police officer Dustin Lopez while he was still on the police force. Last Thursday, the Tucumcari City Commission approved $25,000 allocation for the deductible portion of the settlement of this case, indicating a settlement might be near. In the case, Maggie Ventures, L.L.C. of Nevada, the...

  • Lawmakers pulling heist that rivals state lore

    Albuquerque Journal|Jan 31, 2018

“The Great Taos Bank Robbery” is a gem of an essay by the late Tony Hillerman, who captured the essence of New Mexico in that and many other essays and novels. Sadly, he could have had a field day writing about the bait-and-switch repeal in 2005 of the gross receipts tax on food that to this day is costing the people it was supposed to help millions of dollars. It was the equivalent of a government heist pulled off in broad daylight — and one that anybody paying attention knew was coming. Hillerman’s bank robbery piece begins with a telepho...

  • Russia business bears watching

    Steve Hansen, Correspondent|Jan 31, 2018

I’ve been trying to get a handle on what’s going on with Trump and Russia, Hillary and Russia and all the dossiers, secret meetings and bipartisan obfuscation. I did a little research and came up with this possible guide to the apparent components of what may be going on, maybe: Trump-Russia The key question: Did the Donald Trump campaign get illegal help from the Russian government in the process of electing Trump our president? Robert Mueller is the special counsel in charge of the official investigation into that question. He’s not sayin...

  • Lady Rattlers top Clayton

    Thomas Garcia, Staff writer|Jan 31, 2018

The Tucumcari Lady Rattlers now prepare for a tough Texico team following a narrow victory over one of their toughest opponents to date. The Lady Rattlers basketball program improved to 22-0, but its 63-59 win against Clayton on Saturday at the Snake Pit was the hardest fought for the team since a 61-60 win on Dec. 8 at Logan. Tucumcari was in an unfamiliar place at the close of the third period, trailing the Clayton Lady Yellowjackets. Clayton's seven-point cushion was short lived in the final...

  • Rattlers to host Wolverines

    Thomas Garcia, Staff writer|Jan 31, 2018

Ball control, being mindful of the game situation and free throws are three issues the Tucumcari Rattlers will need to address as they look for their first district win against a stout Wolverines team. The Rattlers (9-12, 0-2) will host the top-ranked Texico Wolverines (21-0, 2-0) Friday at the Snake Pit in Tucumcari. The Rattlers lost 54-52 Saturday to the Clayton Yellowjackets in their second District 5-3A game in three days. The guys will have to push past Saturday’s and Thursday’s loss at Santa Rosa (70-44) and focus on the task in fro...

Dunlap said the team has what its needs to succeed — good techniques and the best conditioning in the state. “Now is the time for us to show just how much we have progressed from the season,” Dunlap sa...

  • Look to scripture for government purpose, your rights

    Gordan Runyan, Religion columnist|Jan 31, 2018

Here are two questions I wish Christian citizens would learn to ask their public servants and political candidates. Then, listen to the answers. A new believer who has been reading the Bible for a month could give the right answers. Politicians either cannot or will not, and what they do say will be highly instructive with regard to what they intend to do to you. The first is, “What is the purpose of government?” The Bible’s answer is that civil government is ordained by God to punish the bad gu...
