Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Jan 29, 2025

Quay County is seeking alternate funding to finish the design and construction of a new Dr. Daniel C. Trigg Memorial Hospital in Tucumcari. County commissioners on Monday approved a resolution authorizing an application for financial aid from the New Mexico Finance Authority for the project. The county had applied for $20 million in grants or loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the hospital, but county manager Daniel Zamora said that has faced numerous delays. He said with the recent change in the presidential administration,...

  • Problem affects about 300 city water bills

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Jan 29, 2025

A problem earlier this month with Tucumcari residents who use automatic drafts to pay their water bills affected about 300 accounts and caused a few dozen to briefly have their water service incorrectly cut off for non-payment. New city manager Renee Hayoz, who officially took over the position on Jan. 1 from retiring city manager Paula Chacon, briefly described the problem during her manager’s report at a city commission meeting Thursday. She and city financial specialist Cynthia Sanchez, who handles the accounts payable, elaborated on the p...

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Jan 29, 2025

SAN JON - Two things stood out in residents' preferences about a new San Jon School. They want plenty of shade outdoors, and they don't mind that the new building will be smaller. A final design for the structure took another step Wednesday when district officials and architects hosted a community meeting at the school cafeteria to take input on the project. More than 30 people attended. Owen Kramme of Albuquerque-based Formative Architecture firm, which has been tasked to design the school,...

On the advice of state auditors, the president of Mesalands Community College said he soon would create a finance committee to take a closer look at the college’s finances. President Allen Moss said during the board of trustees meeting on Jan. 21 that he asked officials at the New Mexico Office of the State Auditor, which is conducting a fiscal-year 2024 audit and a special audit on the college, what it could do quickly based on what auditors had seen so far. Moss said state auditors recommended that Mesalands create a finance committee of two...

  • Messages from the deceased

    Leonard Lauriault, Religion columnist|Jan 29, 2025

Many funerals I’ve attended included a message from the deceased to all their family, friends and everyone else still living. Last year, I had the privilege of officiating at a dear Christian lady’s funeral during which I based my comments on some things I read during my morning devotion that day, which included two books by Harry Gipson, a now-deceased preacher where I attend church. Those books are “Sweeter Than Honey” and “Meet Jesus, Our Contemporary.” I thought those readings described the decedent’s life well and her message to th...

  • Learning a little about when Trump tells the truth

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Jan 29, 2025

Unbelievably, I think I’ve learned something new about Donald Trump during his most recent ascent to the throne. One is obvious, I suppose: He’s not always a liar. He does, or attempts to do, what he promises his supporters he’ll do. He just lies to justify it. Case in point: He says “illegal” immigrants are fueling violent crimes in the U.S., which is altogether untrue. Violent crime in America is nearly always homemade. Trump lies when he talks about the sins of undocumented migrants in the U.S., but he’s not lying when he talks a mass deport...

  • King would be on front lines even now

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Jan 29, 2025

This month, as they have for almost 40 years, millions of Americans will celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. He was indisputably one of the most iconic historical figures of the 20th century, dedicating his life to ensuring that the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness would become a reality for all those who were marginalized and deprived of full citizenship and equal rights. King endured scurrilous and acerbic attacks from his enemies during his all-too-brief life. Like many people, he was a complex man. He was...

  • 2020 loss was blessing in disguise

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Jan 29, 2025

It was a good thing Ronald Reagan didn’t win the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in 1976. It’s also a good thing Donald Trump lost to Joe Biden in 2020. It’s strange to say, but both of their losses turned out for the better – for themselves and, so far anyway, for our country and the world. In my father’s case, as I’ve written before, if he had become president in 1976, he would not have been able to pull off his historic accomplishments – winning the Cold War without a fight, fixing the U.S. economy and making America strong...

  • Defense lifts Lady Rattlers

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Jan 29, 2025

Good defense will cure a lot of ills. Despite spotting Santa Rosa a 6-0 lead amid a shooting slump, the Tucumcari girls basketball team's defense overwhelmed the Lady Lions during a 63-39 district victory Saturday at Rattler Gymnasium. The Lady Rattlers' swarming press and relentless coverage made 24 steals against Santa Rosa. In a sign how stifling Tucumcari's D was, the Lady Lions committed three 10-second penalties where they failed to move the ball past the halfcourt line. Caylee Benavidez...

  • No. 1-ranked Lions fight off Rattlers

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Jan 29, 2025

Tucumcari's boys basketball team didn't quite scare No. 1-ranked Santa Rosa, but it at least caused some worry for the Lions and their fans. Despite Tucumcari falling into a 17-point deficit to start the game, the Rattlers twice whittled their opponent's lead to six in the fourth quarter before the Lions made enough shots and free throws to prevail 73-58 in a district battle Saturday at Rattler Gymnasium. The Rattlers (5-11) suffered their seventh straight loss despite a heroic effort by Luis...
