Tumbleweeds have gathered along the west and east side of Elder Street in one section, narrowing it down to one lane. An eyesore, fire hazard and reminder of New Mexico winds has one county resident concerned and asking when county officials will act. "They are everywhere," Jo Collins, a resident on Quay County's Elder Street about numerous tumbleweeds which seem to have taken root in the ditches and fence lines along her street. "They sure are ugly, lining my fence and taking over my yard," Collins said. The county road is just outside of Tucu...

Trip Jennings It is unclear how House Speaker Ben Lujan’s fight with lung cancer will play out day-to-day over the next month, whether he will show up each morning or miss portions of the state Legislature’s 30-day session. Lujan didn’t address that issue in remarks Tuesday to a stand-room-only crowd in the House of Representatives. But some lawmakers already were planning for a novel, possibly historic, situation over the next four weeks. “In the coming days there’s going to be a lot of new ground plowed because we’ve never experienced...

Days remaining in session: 29 Bus Stopped: For more than a decade — probably longer — the state Transportation Department has provided a shuttle bus during legislative sessions, with stops at various parking lots in the city to take people to and from the Roundhouse. But no more. Manon Arnett, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation said Tuesday that the state decided to eliminate the shuttle due to a decrease in ridership and the increased availability of parking in the nearby parking garage built across Don Gaspar Street fro...

I had the pleasure of spending the weekend with a roundup of cowboy friends. (This means that you fed the horses and caked the cows before breakfast). Tales were told, goats were cooked, music was played and it went on for days! But the background in my grand memories of this long weekend was the ever-present "cowboy motif" at our host's ranch house. Everywhere I turned it was like flipping through the pages of COWBOYS and INDIANS magazine! And it all seemed to be in good taste. The foot-high tubular clay pipe with the character of a smiling...
The Tucumcari Rattlers swept the East Mountain High Timberwolves Tuesday at Sandia Park. A 39-point run by the Rattlers (8-4) in the third period after a tied first half led to an 89-41 win over the Timbewolves (5-5). The Timberwolves turned the ball over 10 times in the second half which allowed the potent Rattlers offense to extend the gap. The Lady Rattlers' defense kept the Lady Timberwolves (1-11) in check as they won 49-27. Despite early foul trouble for the team the Lady Rattlers (3-7) led 32-10 at the half. Applying a full courtpress...

By the time you read this Tim Tebow may be back to worshipping God in a church instead of on a football field. I hope he's making plans to play in an AFC Conference Championship next Sunday but I don't necessarily believe God is going to look down on Tom Brady and the Patriots. This whole buildup of Tebow's need to immediately thank God when a play goes his way has been a little troubling to many. But then Christ himself evoked some of the same feelings in his day. Many didn't want to credit him with all they saw happening with their own eyes...

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God…" Romans 8:28 Last week I was given a very valuable piece of advice when I was facing a crisis. I was told that no matter what the outcome of the situation was, whether good or bad, that God knew the whole story and knew what was best for our lives. They told me that God was in control of our lives and we had to place ourselves in His hands and it was up to us to accept His will. Now it doesn't matter who told me this, what the situation was, or what happened. Each of u...
The Supreme Court last week delivered a resounding victory for religious freedom, made all the more impressive by its unanimity. In a 9-0 decision, the court ruled that government cannot dictate to religious institutions whom they can hire or fire for leadership positions. That represented a convincing rejection of the Obama administration's position, which was that churches should be treated no differently under federal and state employment discrimination law than secular employers. Such laws ban discrimination in employment based on race, eth...

We have one great friend who is very proud to have been born in 1912 shortly after New Mexico became a state. Mrs. Sue Wallace Tucek was born just across the state line in Briscoe County, Texas, and moved to the Norton area with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hutson Wallace, when she was 9 months old. Her five sisters and two brothers, all except Joe, were born at the ranch home. Many of us know Mrs. Tucek who taught Home Economics at Tucumcari High School for most of her 39 years of teaching. Her family and close friends know her as one of the main...
