  • Letter to the editor: Gun control matter of safety

    Jan 8, 2013

Your Dec. 19 editorial — "Gun control not answer to tragedy" — gives one view of a serious problem facing our country. There are a lot of facts from various research projects and prestigious academic facilities that show that more guns equals more violence. No one has advocated eliminating the Second Amendment. But there should be laws, such as background checks, types of guns, magazine capacity, types of ammunition and amounts plus liability insurance. We register our cars and the government does not pick them up. Why should guns be dif... Full story

He said he intends to "watch mostly" in his first year as a representative for Curry and Quay...

  • Column: Rough time coming off holidays

    Jan 8, 2013

Am I the only one who feels a bit rough starting out the week after operating on holiday time the past few weeks? Christmas and New Year's are two very important and celebrated holidays with little time between to recover. Each has their own rituals which most likely include; family, friends, food, and parties. I mean come on who doesn't like a good party? For me the time between the two holidays passed quickly and while I had plenty of time to rest and relax, I chose to keep going and enjoy myself. Now as if it were not enough with the... Full story

  • Lauriault: God's intentions often misinterpreted

    Jan 8, 2013

At a buffet luncheon recently someone said to the person sitting next to me, "I can't believe you're hungry after you had that burrito grande for breakfast." My neighbor replied that he was a growing boy, to which I added that fat husbands make wives and mothers-in-law look good. I was referring to their ability to cook, which I admire as indicated by my girth, but he took it differently and said tongue-in-cheekily, "You mean because he makes them look thinner than they actually are when they stand together?" Because that's not at all what I... Full story

  • Comments from the canyons: Weathering blizzards less arduous these days

    Jan 8, 2013

After our little snowfall last week, some of us began talking about some of the storms of the past and how they affected our lives. Of course, we didn't have much pavement in the county; thus, we did most of our traveling on very muddy roads as the snow melted. By the mid 1940s, several of the main roads in the county had been topped with caliche and...
