    Thomas Garcia|Jan 4, 2017

The following is a glimpse of the top stories and photos published in the Quay County Sun in 2016: Local/state government • Despite a threat of recall by a county resident and public objection by several residents, Tucumcari city commissioners approved an ordinance placing a six-per-year limit on the number of garage sales residents can conduct a year during their June 23 meeting. In April, Tucumcari resident Dena Mericle had started an online petition against the proposed ordinance. Mericle, w...

    Thomas Garcia|Jan 4, 2017

By Thomas Garcia QCS Senior Writer The Tucumcari Rattlers lost their three games during the Citizens Bank Invite basketball tournament this weekend at Texico. "We need to do a better job of taking care of the ball," said John Span, Rattlers head coach. Span said the Rattlers (2-5) had 20 turnovers during Friday's 52-43 loss to the Tularosa Wildcats (8-3). He said other factors impacting the Rattlers during the tournament were missed open shots and free throws. "We missed too many open shots...

  • Try, try again

    Thomas Garcia|Jan 4, 2017

By Thomas Garcia QCS Senior Writer A new year means resolution time - only this year, instead of asking people what resolutions they are making for the 2017 year, we asked locals what resolution they have had a difficulty living up to. Name: Georgia Lujan What is your failed resolution? Losing weight. Every year I start out doing good for the first three months. I eat right and exercise and even count calories. I slowly begin to progress back to bad habits. I will start slacking off on the exerc...

  • Can't believe a thing Trump says

    Jan 4, 2017

In the third paragraph of his Dec. 28 column, Rube Render states: “The insinuation that an American president would instigate a terrorist attack on our country borders on indicting him as a traitor and is inexcusable.” Coming up with a “pants on fire” statement in the beginning of an article is about par for conservatives but way below Trump’s average. Paul Krugman made no such insinuation; he stated that Bush benefited from the 9/11 attack. The “pants on fire” statement is further enhanced in the fourth paragraph by saying the New York Time...

  • More spending won't fix education

    Albuquerque Journal|Jan 4, 2017

It is a cautionary tale, from a respected outside institution, as to the folly of simply throwing money at early childhood education without accountability measures. Those who would advocate for another raid on the Land Grant Permanent Fund in the name of helping New Mexico’s youngest children should take heed. Because so far, spending hundreds of millions of dollars on New Mexico’s Head Start has left the Land of Enchantment dead last in the nation when it comes to instructional quality. And that should come as no surprise, given the dis...

  • Mourn, then continue Mihm's work

    Steve Hansen|Jan 4, 2017

I was visiting England last week when I learned that John Mihm had died. His sudden and untimely passing leaves me with a sense of loss. I was not one of John’s close friends, but I was well acquainted with John and admired him and his accomplishments. I had done a little work with John on economic development matters and bought eyeglasses from him. I also covered the five-person race in which he won his Tucumcari City Commission seat and talked to him often about city business and economic development. My sense of loss comes from what he h...

  • Sometimes, the 'news' is just lies

    Rube Render|Jan 4, 2017

On Nov. 9, the New York Times reported, “Donald John Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States on Tuesday in a stunning culmination of an explosive, populist and polarizing campaign that took relentless aim at the institutions and long-held ideals of American democracy.” This is an example of “news.” A man described as a “YouTube star and serial prankster” was recently escorted off an airplane for speaking loudly in Arabic to his mom on his cell phone. Adam Saleh, who claims...

    Jan 4, 2017

January 1974 • A Fort Worth, Texas, man by the name of William Harvey Baker led the Tucumcari police on a vehicle chase that ended tragically. Baker was stopped on West Tucumcari Boulevard, because the car he was driving had Texas dealership plates. The officers became suspicious with Baker's answers and had him follow them to the police station to clarify the matter. Baker veered across the median trying to escape and placed a .357 revolver to his head and pulled the trigger while three hitchhikers he had picked up earlier in the day w...
