I enjoyed westerns as a young person in the 1960' and 70's. One of the favorite action scenes was of a covered wagon circled to ward off an attack by "Indians," as Native Americans were once called. Eventually you could hear the distant sound of a bugle signaling that the cavalry was coming to the rescue. This was often just in time to save the day, although occasionally a hero would die saving someone else's life. I thought of the cavalry coming to the rescue and saving the day recently and because the Easter season was approaching, I...

New Mexico remembers Gary Johnson as the two-term governor, 1995-2003, who vetoed more legislative bills than maybe all 49 other governors. By his count Johnson signed more than 750 vetoes. That left the state's Democrats and Republicans frustrated by what they thought of as gridlock rather than good government. We typically agreed with Johnson's assessment. He left the governor's office due to term limits but has popped up on the national political landscape this year as the presidential frontrunner among libertarians. And in a March 22 poll,...
It's not easy being a fool. Then again it hasn't been easy turning 26 today either. OK, maybe I better ask for forgiveness and just admit there's a fine line between April Fools prankster and liar. I'm not particularly good at either. As the resident April Fool I've more often been the butt of jokes on April 1 than the one doing the hee-hawing. I wish I had written them all down, they would make a great book of pranks. Let's just say that candles you can't blow out got just a little old over the years. The year I turned 21 coworkers at the...

Despite the lack of moisture, signs of spring can be seen as we wander around in our town and county. Although a number of fruit trees bloomed a bit early and were caught by some frost, others managed to bloom a little later, giving us the idea that we might have some fresh fruit to eat later in the year. Tulips and daffodils have been showing off for several weeks and have added their beautiful colors to the rather dull landscape left by the cold weather. Just looking at those colorful plants makes the day brighter and the wind less bothersome...

State Rep. Dennis Roch, R-Texico, met with Quay County residents Tuesday night at a town hall meeting at the Logan Civic Center. "I knew there are a lot of issues on their minds, water being one of them," Roch said, "which is why I specifically set this meeting up in Logan." Roch said he knew the topic of the Ute Water Pipeline would come up during Tuesday night's Town Hall meeting. "The water in that reservoir is the lifeblood of this community," Roch said. Roch first spoke to the residents about the results of the 30-day legislative session,...
PORTALES — A Tucumcari city commissioner requested help Tuesday from the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority. At the end of the authority's meeting at Portales City Hall, Robert Lumpkin said he made the trip because Tucumcari and Quay County needed help resolving a pair of issues, and he figured the authority had more pull with the Interstate Streams Commission than he did. He first said he was in full support of the Eastern New Mexico Rural Water System — a pipeline from Ute Reservoir to authority members in Curry and Roosevelt cou... Full story
